Alerting English speakers to the need to take more responsibility to make ourselves understood when we communicate internationally with people who are not mother-tongue-English is an undertaking that was encouraged by my European clients. I am grateful to all of them for their assistance in this project, but most of all, I want to thank Mr. Franco Reali and his employees at Bertelsmann Music Group, Italy, who have been my teachers as well as my students.
I assume responsibility for all of the recommendations in this book, while simultaneously acknowledging the tremendous debt I owe to my former colleagues at Decker Communications, Inc., where I learned, practiced, and taught "what works" in communications. I especially thank Bert Decker for his permission to adapt The Decker Grid System as an example of how to organize a presentation.
Two additional bouquets: first to Maria Jutasi Coleman, who encouraged and supported me to write this book instead of just talk about it, and second to Sandy Boucher, who urged me to take that final step of sending it to a publisher.

Introduction
Does the world really need another book on public speaking? Is there anything new to say that hasn't already been adequately said? Have we discovered any great new techniques to communicate more effectively or are we just talking about gimmicky versions of techniques as old as Aristotle? Is there a revolutionary theory about how audiences process information or can we only recycle and paraphrase what we already know?
Until several years ago, I would have suggested a ban on any new books on public speaking as an admirable target for ecology experts bent on saving trees. I had worked for a decade as director of training and product development for one of the foremost communication skill-training companies in the United States. In addition to conducting seminars and individual consultations on how to be a more effective public speaker, I was also responsible for reviewing newly published books. Topics ranged from how to come across like Mother Teresa during a press conference concerning your company's recent environmental disaster, to how to make sure an errant strand of dental floss isn't dangling from your suit lapel throughout the course of your presentation.
Page 2
I recognized that if you were to multiply the millions of business and professional presentations given every year by the quotient of nervousness and incompetence that accompany them, the market for public speaking books might well be inexhaustible. Nevertheless, I wasn't persuaded that there was anything new to say, and I certainly wouldn't have considered writing a book myself. But then I began to work as a language and communications consultant in Europe and soon discovered a need so large, yet so camouflaged, that I had to encounter it repeatedly before I could accurately identify it.
