Walking Spells:
Making Magic on the Move
Melissa Tipton
F or years, I associated casting spells with creating a stationary magic circle or setting up my altar. In a pinch, I would sometimes cast a spell on the go, but I didnt intentionally use this movement as part of the spell, which was odd, given how regular hikes in the woods are also an important part of my spiritual practice. Why not put the two together? In experimenting over the years with movement magic, Ive discovered some potent practices for casting what I call walking spells.
There are two phases to these spells, the first of which is optional if youre already clear on your spells focus. Phase one is divination and phase two is spellcasting, and for both, there are endless ways to adapt and personalize these practices. Here, Ill outline the basic framework as well as provide fun ways to tweak and customize it.
Phase One: Divination
Perhaps you have a general idea of your reason for casting a spell, but you want to get crystal clear in order to boost the effectiveness of your magic. Or maybe you have many things that you want to work on, and youre not sure which would be most productive to focus on first. In either case, performing divination prior to spellwork paves the way for more successful magic. I also like to use this phase as a sort of check and balance. Am I casting a spell that is truly in accordance with my highest good? If not, does the spell simply need some refining, or would another aim entirely be a better use of my time and energy? These are all wonderful inquiries for this phase.
Before setting off on your divination walk, settle on a question to get you started, such as What would be the most effective spell to cast right now? You might also narrow it down a bit: for example, What would be the most effective spell to cast right now regarding increasing my satisfaction at work? Or perhaps you already know that you want to cast a spell for more harmony in your romantic relationship, so you might ask, I want to cast a spell for more harmony in my relationship with Kyle. What is most important for me to know before moving forward? Or you might consider this: I want to cast a spell for more harmony in my relationship with Kyle. What do my highest guides and teachers think of this plan?
Before setting out on your walk, take a few minutes to calm and center yourself by focusing on your breath and closing your eyes. Bring your question to mind and say it aloud with the following statement:
I ask for the presence and aid of my guides and teachers on this matter. Thank you!
And now, head out for your walk. It can be valuable to bring a notebook or voice recorder to capture any insights. Imagine that the world around you is conducting a dynamic conversation containing valuable insights to your question. By walking and engaging with your surroundings, you are listening to and participating in this conversation. Remain open and curious without getting too bogged down with trying to figure it all out. Here are some of the many possible ways the world might respond to your inquiry:
- With a street sign or other lettering that captures your attention
- With an animal, insect, plant, and so on that catches your eye
- With a snippet of overheard conversation or a song lyric
- With a pattern in the clouds
- With an abundance of a particular color
- By triggering an emotion, memory, or interesting thought
If you feel insight flowing through in regard to your question and this, then, leads to a follow-up question, keep the conversation going: ask the new question (perhaps mentally if youre in a public place) and continue to walk with curiosity. Repeat this process until you either feel clear in regard to your spell or you have an intuitive sense that youve gathered enough information and its now time to process it. If the latter, take some time once you return home or contemplate as you walk the clues you have gathered. I find writing this material down to be an invaluable step, but talking it out to yourself or a partner can work wonders too.
