1 Your Place in the World of Fashion
Red lights flash and pulse. Throbbing dance music blares. Supermodel Naomi Campbell struts down a catwalk wearing a large, feathered headdress and a flowing ball gown, giving attitude to a celebrity-packed audience. MTV cameras are on one side, VH1 on the other. Joan Rivers gossips with Cindy Crawford backstage, while a frantic designer rushes to perfect his latest creation before it is paraded in front of the press. This is the world of fashion that we see regularly on television. But is this the real world of fashion?
Well, yes, it is. But it is only a small part of it. This is the part that the fashion industry likes to show the world, because it generates publicity and excitement about fashion and helps to sell clothes. Many young people become interested in working in fashion because of the glamorous spectacle that has been presented to them through the media. But the real world of fashion is much more diverse than that, and it is filled with very real career opportunitiesboth in front of and away from the cameras and the spotlights. Not all of them are as exciting as the scene described above, but careers in fashion can be challenging, creative, and yes, sometimes glamorous.

The Ups and Downs of Fashion
The world of fashion provides excellent creative careers for artistic people, but there are plenty of business-oriented positions available as well. This duality helps make the fashion world interesting, especially since crossover between different types of jobs is always possible within the field. Many fashion jobs offer great potential for fun, enormous salaries, and international travel. There is also potential for quiet, solitude, and security for those seeking such things in a job, depending upon which end of the business you go into.
