Foreword
I found fashion almost by accident. In 1969 I was 22 years old and visiting the U.S. from Europe to do some modeling. Fashion here was either wild hippy garb, stiff little designer dresses or drip-dry polyester, and I thought there was something missing... chic, affordable dresses that real women of all ages and sizes could wear from a day at the office to a night out.
Following my instincts, I went to Italy to do some "homework" and worked for an Italian textile mill that developed wonderful knit jersey fabrics. I learned all about knitting, printing and garment manufacturing and proceeded to design the simple little wrap dress I had imagined. I broke all the rules, combining a sporty t-shirt fabric with a feminine body-conscious style, because I really believed that it was the right product at the right time. Luckily, so did Diana Vreeland, the powerful editor of American Vogue, and with her advice that I rent a hotel room to show my dresses to buyers during market week, I was on my way!
The most important thing in pursuing a career in fashion is to believe in yourself and your vision. Nothing can compete with passion. When a company making my women's line went out of business, just as I was getting a great reaction to a new dress concept I was testing, I quickly took the business in-house so as not to lose the momentum. Being able to sense and quickly react to changes in the marketplace is critical to surviving in today's constantly changing times. You have to be flexible

and creative enough to come up with plan B when plan A fails, and then have the "guts" to put it into action!
Contrary to popular belief, this business is 99 percent hard work and 1 percent glamour. You have to be willing to do whatever it takes to get the job done. For most of us, there is no time clock and no pay for overtime. When my first dress shipment was held up by U.S. Customs because all of the labels were mistakenly printed in Italian, I was at the airport until midnight rewriting them in English, so I could honor my first shipping deadlines.
In this age of specialization, a focused product and clearly defined market niche are probably even more important than when I first started out. Your vision must make sense for the times and fill a specific need for your target customer or it will get lost in a sea of others. You must be able to at least understand both the nuts-and-bolts of daily operations (sourcing, production, selling-in to the stores, shipping, distribution, selling-thru to the customer) as well as the romancing of the product via good public relations and publicity. And whether you're looking for a new boss/mentor to teach you the ropes, or later on a crackerjack assistant to help you get your job done, always surround yourself with the best people you can find. You can tell a lot about people by the team they play on.
The biggest challenge in fashion for me is staying one step ahead of the times, the trends and the customer. The biggest reward is meeting customers wherever I go, listening and talking to them, and seeing them respond to my products.
