Preface
This book is about jobs for which you can qualify if you obtain the proper vocational or technical training. Although it will tell you about many opportunities, it is by no means complete. Over 30,000 different occupations have been identified recentlyhence no single volume could over even a part of them.
A word of caution before you start reading ahead. In looking forward to a career, think first about yourself and what you would like to do, not about the most desirable or glamorous job which may appeal to you now. Ask yourself if you enjoy working with ideas, or with tools and your hands. Would you want to associate with people as part of a team, or work by yourself? Would an indoor or outdoor position be best? Would you be most interested by a desk job or a post at a machine, or a job where your are not tied down to one workplace? In other words, consider your work preferences first; have an idea of the type of job that would be best for you. As you read ahead, keep that preference in mind.
There should be demand for workers to do all the jobs mentioned in this book, although it is always possible that changing economic or other conditions could alter career prospects for any occupation. For many jobs we have indicated both the growth prospects for the period of 19902000 and recent earnings based on the year 1988, the

latest available statistics as compiled by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. You will note that in some cases average or median salaries are given. An average is arrived at by adding several numerals and dividing by the number of figures. A median is the middle figure in a list of numbers. Thus for the numbers 2, 5, 6, 9, and 13, the average is 7 and the median is 6. Although the salary figures are not current, they will give you a good idea of the earnings prospects of the jobs for which they are mentioned.
At the ends of most chapters you will find the names of organizations to contact for further information. When writing be sure to enclose a self-addressed, stamped envelope. The titles of other career books that may prove helpful to you are listed under Suggested Readings in the back of this book.
