About the Authors
Jay R. Gould is Emeritus Professor of Communication at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Troy, New York. He was a founder and director of the Technical Writers' Institute, established in 1953 at Rensselaer, and he is an outstanding technical writing authority and consultant.
Dr. Gould has authored and coauthored several books, including Exposition: Technical and Popular, a basic text in technical description, which he wrote with Dr. Sterling P. Olmsted. With Joseph N. Ulman, Jr., he is the author of Technical Reporting, now in its third edition, and for the American Chemical Society he has produced Practical Technical Writing, a cassette technical writing course. Dr. Gould has recently edited an anthology of technical and scientific articles, Directions in Technical Writing and Communication, and he is the series editor of New Essays in Technical and Scientific Communication, both books published by the Baywood Publishing Company. At present he is the editor of Baywood's Journal of Technical Writing and Communication. Dr. Gould is also the author of a number of magazine articles on technical communication.
Dr. Gould has served as a teacher of technical writing and as a consultant for many industrial firms in the United States and abroad. He has acted as a visiting professor in technical commu-

nication in Australia and is a fellow of the Society for Technical Communication and of the American Business Communication Association. He has received an award from the National Council of Teachers of English for his work in communication.
Wayne A Losano is Associate Professor of English at the University of Florida. He is Director of Freshman English and Coordinator of Business and Technical Communication and teaches a variety of graduate and undergraduate professional communication and composition courses.
Dr. Losano was previously head of the Department of Communication at Queensland Institute of Technology in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. Prior to that he taught technical writing at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York, and at Lowell Technological Institute in Massachusetts. He has been a communication consultant for a number of companies, including Shell Oil Company, Marathon Oil, Xerox Corporation, and FMC Corporation.
He is a member of the Society for Technical Communication and the American Business Communication Association and has made presentations at a number of conferences. He has had articles published in the Journal of Technical Writing and Communication, The Technical Writing Teacher, the ABCA Bulletin
