Foreword
Years ago, when I first entered this profession, the field was very different from what it is today. It was a relatively new addition to the corporate structure and still somewhat ill-defined and underutilized. But because it existed to serve people, with all their contrasts and complexities, it was a fascinating and rewarding job to have.
It is definitely still rewarding, but the times have changed. Today the field of human resource management (HRM) is firmly entrenched in the workplace hierarchy. It is one of the most pivotal and indispensable departments in an organization, as lively and dynamic as the work force it seeks to serve.
Today's work force is among the most diverse, best educated, and most motivated in our country's history. People at work today want more than a paycheck. They seek employment that is fulfilling as well as challenging. They want jobs that are significant within the organization and to the economy at large. HRM professionals work to accommodate the needs and goals of both the worker and the employer, and, more than ever, the success of any organization depends now on the individual productivity, efficiency, and well-being of each worker.
