Foreword
The need to help and care for one another is as old as the first human communitiesand equally valid for a modern mass society. On the threshold of the twenty-first century, the nonprofit sector of the American economy is more important than ever. For many it embodies the best and most powerful values of our nation: pride in the dignity of work, the chance to put into practice an ethic of caring, and the realization that one person can make a difference.
That is why there is such a particular need for this book. Opportunities in Nonprofit Careers presents a broad range of material about the nonprofit community that will serve as a definitive guide for those exploring careers in the field. As this book so admirably demonstrates, the nonprofit world is wide and varied, and each chapter is enriched by concrete examples of actual professional experiences. Some of the information may surprise you, and some is common knowledgebut all of it is honest, revealing, and instructive and will be a valuable tool for individuals of any age considering a career change or aspiring to get started in this rewarding sector of the workplace.
I believe it is vital to cultivate bright, articulate, and committed men and women willing to share not only their good will and their spirit but their skills and their leadership in nonprofit enterprises.
Page v
In these times of so much change and social unrest, we must renew a sense of caring, encouraging all Americans to not only assert their rights but fulfill their duty to give something back for the common good.
It is my hope that Opportunities in Nonprofit Careers will help persuade a new generation to build their careers in service to this common good, embracing the opportunities that nonprofits offer for unsurpassed personal and professional growth.
