Foreword
Opportunities for a full-time career, supplementing a family income, or just making "pin" money in the crafts field are many and varied. As the editor of the leading how-to crafts consumer magazine, I have the pleasure of dealing daily with people in all walks of crafts and crafting.
These opportunities range from the manufacturer who produces or imports the supplies to the wholesaler who gets them into the hands of the retailer who in turn sells them to the consumer. Falling in between those three key people are the designer/author who creates designs and patterns and writes the step-by-step instructions for the kit manufacturer or the publisher and his or her team of experts to the all-important photographer, typesetter, color separator, and printer.
Let's not forget the teacher/demonstrator in a craft retail store or on the floor of a trade show. Equally visible are the self-publishers of softcover "floppy" books, the craft sellers at craft fairs, small business people who sell their patterns or specialty supplies by mail order, and crafters who sell their one-of-a-kind or limited edition projects on consignment to craft and gift shops.
The serious craft opportunist can learn much from a consumer how-to magazine. The very factors which motivate our readers to take the time to learn the skills necessary to master any given

craft technique can easily be translated to the individual who doesn't have the time, patience, work space, or opportunity to make his or her own creations, but who, nevertheless, wants to enjoy and appreciate the functional uses and beauty of a well-executed handcrafted item.
No matter which avenue of crafts you decide to pursue, it is important to have a working knowledge of your audience and to channel your activities to the needs and desires of that audience. Therefore, you should be aware that most people who craft for themselves do so for the following reasons: (1) gift giving, (2) home decor, (3) holidays, (4) wearable art, and (5) pride in saying, "I made it myself" or in owning a fine-crafted, high-quality item.
If you target your craft goals to fulfilling one or several of the above needs and couple them with the love and satisfaction of a job well done, you will discover one of the most rewarding paths of endeavor you will ever experience.
