PREFACE
Interest in protective clothing has grown tremendously in the past decade due to greater awareness about worker safety and health in atypical or hazardous work environments. Government agencies such as the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) have issued guidelines, recommendations, and rules for worker safety in various occupational hazard situations, whereas industry and independent organizations have developed standards for personal protective equipment (PPE). At the same time, major strides have been made in the development and marketing of new high-performance materials (textiles, polymers, composites) for protective clothing. This trend is supported by an increasing demand for totally protective personal equipment such as fully encapsulated suits for use in hazardous waste disposal sites, when responding to chemical spills or fires, or in high-hazard industrial operations.
There are many occupations that require specific activities and different levels of protection. Hence, a large variety of protective clothing and equipment is currently available and new products are being introduced continuously. The success of an industrial hygiene, health, and safety program rests on the appropriate selection, use, and maintenance of personal protective equipment, as well as on training of employees in the proper use of the selected apparatus. This volume focuses on scientific and technical developments in this field, as well as on practical information regarding protective apparel systems vital to workers' safety in hazardous environments.
