We dedicate this book to the memory of Douglas Brookins coauthor of Chapter 7, fellow teacher, and admired friend. He passed away suddenly on April 30, 1991. Doug taught and conducted research on issues in environmental geochemistry with great energy, insight, and passion. More than anyone, he placed science above politics and often bucked the mainstream. His memory and his contributions will long endure.
