Foreword
BY STEPHEN R. COVEY
This is a truly amazing book. You ask me why its so amazing? First of all, its extremely timely and relevant. It starts with the mind, heart, and need of the reader, and the stories are real. It also is multidimensional, in that it focuses on the seven motivations that influence career decisions: family, independence, learning, money, passion, setback, and talent. Each of these motivational sections contains five real stories that magnificently illustrate the points being made. It also includes Alexandra Levits very wise counsel about preparing to put the change to work. Each preparation is uniquely suited to the nature of the motivation being developed. Every section includes a resource toolkit, book suggestions, and many extremely practical ideas on how to put the change to work.
Ive always believed that we possess four unique human gifts, or endowments, that animals do not possess: self-awareness, imagination, conscience, and willpower. Every story here embodies these four endowments or giftsnot in theoretical or philosophical terms, but in very practical things to do.
We live in a new economy that is moving from the Industrial Age, top-down, command-and-control, hierarchical model to the Knowledge Worker Age of empowerment and courage and creativity. We also live at a difficult recessionary time, but that does not mean we are fundamentally a product of our environment. We are not victims of circumstances. We are the creative force of our own lives. Every story given in this book beautifully illustrates and motivates us to become this creative force and to avoid the metastasizing cancers of victimism and co-dependency.
When you read these stories, your sense of creativity, courage, self confidence, and business savvy will profoundly increase. It will be enormously encouraging to you, particularly in this new economy and difficult recessionary period.
Frankly, Ive never found a book quite like it, in terms of its encouragement, wisdom, practicality, and sheer enlightenment. I will recommend this book to all who are stuck in their careers and who want to do something different. I will recommend it to people who need to grow in self-reflection and self-awareness, in the use of their imagination, in consulting their conscience regarding their passion and talent, and in exercising their independent will to make these good things happen.
I hope you will soon see for yourself why I am so amazed by this book. How motivating and enlightening! I can see also why Alexandra Levits other books,
