Neither life nor career is linear. The pathway to fulfillment has several twists and turns. Gone are the days of staying in the same role until retirement. In a modern world filled with volatility, uncertainty, complexity and ambiguity, change readiness is essential, particularly in career management. You are in charge of your own career. You have the power to make decisions to change the trajectory of your career, even if the circumstances do not appear that way.
This book is for persons who want to know the steps to take and how to navigate the journey of a career transition, especially if it is likely to involve a change from the path you have been on. People change careers to varying degrees throughout their working lives. In this book, changing career direction or transitioning to a new career includes moving toward a different area of specialization, a different industry or sector, or even taking the decision to become an entrepreneur. As shown in figure 1 (An illustration of the degrees of career direction changes), some changes are slight shifts, while others are drastic. Upward career mobility, such as promotions, career advancement and senior roles, is also addressed and specifically stated in sections of this book.
You may have already confirmed that you want a change, has started exploring what would be involved in changing paths, or youre undecided. This book will provide insights on practical steps you can apply to whichever of these descriptions pertain to you. This is also a good resource for persons who support individuals navigating career changes, including spouses, family members, coaches, mentors, trainers and colleagues.
I wrote this book to simplify the process for persons at different stages of their career journey. It focuses on the transition or the evolving process of moving from one thing to another. The intent is to provide a reason to be hopeful, courageous and confident as you move forward. You do not have to be defined by your history; you can create a new path for yourself. A case study and examples are also included. Those selections are intentional, although there are many other stories I could tell. The case study used was chosen because it is an example of one of the most drastic shifts. These kinds of changes are typically considered very difficult and daunting for people to even contemplate, but as is shared in this book, they are possible. If nothing else, you may discover that you are more ready for a change than you think!
This book outlines several suggested actions to move forward. Conversely, it does not purport that there is a one-size-fits-all recipe for everyone; neither should it be considered as the rendering of career advice. Every reader is different, so every step will not apply 100 per cent to everyone. Adapt the practices that align with where you are. Consider working with a professional, if you need further guidance tailored to your specific situation.
You are still reading, so I infer that you want to know more. Lets start the path together over the next few pages!

This book outlines seven simple steps that will help you to successfully transition and thrive, as you change the direction of your career. I am a Certified Talent Management Professional, CTMP and Career Consultant. I have changed industries and specializations several times throughout my career, and I have also guided professionals in making the transition. After reading this book, you will discover that changing careers is not as intimidating as it seems, and you will be equipped to develop an effective approach to start and execute your new career journey.
Choosing a career is one of the most important life decisions. For many of us, that decision is made as early as high school. Our career choices help to shape our financial viability, our social status and even our sense of worth. It is, therefore, not surprising that a decision to change careers can seem daunting and taking the steps to make the shift may feel overwhelming.
When making the leap, your reasons behind the decision to change careers can also add to your levels of anxiety. Some of these may include
- migration, such as moving to a new city or country;
- change in industry operations, which may cause certain roles to become obsolete;
- pandemic-related job loss; and
- frustration in your present position and the desire for something more fulfilling.
Friends and family might have advised you to remain with the status quo, or have given you great encouragement to pursue your dreams, but you do not have a definite strategy to make it happen. Regardless of the reasons that are pushing you to make the move, or whatever the circumstances you must navigateyou have concluded that a change is necessary.
You dont have to feel chained to your previous career history, past accomplishments, or failures. Changing career paths is not a rare occurrence. In fact, some persons successfully change careers multiple times in their work life. You can change the focus of your work, while remaining in the same industry, by performing job functions that require similar expertise. An example of this would be a physical education teacher who transitions into being a personal trainer in the health and fitness industry. On the other hand, you can make a complete change of sector, industry and job functions, such as a personal trainer that becomes a criminal lawyer.
However, preparing for a career change involves much more than updating your resum. It demands critical reflection, planning and the courage to act. There are questions and action items throughout this book that will encourage reflection and equip you to create a plan of action. I recommend using a career journal to take notes while you read. You can opt to create a digital journal using Microsoft Word, Google Docs, Memo App or any similar tool. If you prefer to write, you can use a regular notebook or diary. Choose the approach that you are most comfortable with.
Lets do this!
