This Book Is for Rita
A strong and tender woman,
an athlete, a sailing dove.
There will always be
a soft spot in our hearts
for Kansas, beautiful Kansas,
land of your birth,
where the fence posts
are made of stone
and the land has muscle-tone.
Stop and feel
the sway of a Kansas wheat
field before harvest,
stop and listen
to the sounds of yeast at work
As we prepare and break
bread in The Old Homeplace.

Prologue
Words from Saul Bellow and Angi Moyer
Years ago, I wrote a seriocomic book manuscript that desperately needed a foreword by a famous writer. So I sent it to my favorite novelist, Saul Bellow, who was at the University of Chicago. In the cover letter, I noted all the other works of this sort that he probably received, and I apologized for even asking him to consider writing a foreword to the manuscript.
''Far from thinking your letter of 8th March 'forward', as you seemed to fear,'' Bellow began a letter to me dated 15th May and sent from Jerusalem, "I decided to take your typescript with me to Scotland in the hope of finding time to read it between meetings, lectures and seminars. In the event the Scottish Art's Council programme left me no time at all so the manuscript followed me to Jerusalem."
Bellow went on to say kind things about the book manuscript but declined to write a foreword to it. He concluded his letter with these words: "Though the Nobel Prize for Literature was an honour that I sincerely appreciated, the lecturing and travelling that it involved were infinitely more disruptive to my writing routine than I had expected. I feel now that I must be ruthless about getting on with my next book and hope you will understand."
