Page vii About This Book Canyoneering 2: Technical Loop Hikes is not for everyone! The guide is designed for experienced desert hikers who are used to covering long distances over rough terrain. All of the routes present a variety of problems, and most require the use of technical rock-climbing equipment for ascending steep rock walls or rappeling down sheer cliffs. At least one person in every group must be proficient at rope work and must have had extensive training on difficult rock faces. A couple of days in a rockclimbing class does not qualify you to attempt most of the routes in this guide. Several of the routes entail hiking long stretches between water sources. This may require carrying two or more gallons of water in packs that are already heavy. It is essential that everyone in your group be in excellent physical condition before heading into the backcountry. Long, hard, hot days are the norm, not the exception. A knowledge of both the prevention and the treatment of hyperthermia is crucial. Most of the hiking is cross-country; there are few trails. You must be proficient at reading maps. Finding the correct route into a canyon may mean the difference between reaching a water source or finding yourself in dire straits.
