He has a PhD in nutrition science and e xerc ise physiolog y and more than 20 y ears e xperienc e leading larg e-scale clinical studies ev aluating th e effects of diets, foods, e xerc ise and lifestyle int erven tions on human health, performance and functionality in health y and clinical populations. Prof essor Brinkw orth s res earch inte rests inclu de dev eloping, testing and tr anslating e ffective nutrition, lifestyle and t echnology solutions for the management of obesity , metabolic health and type 2 diabetes and understanding the ro le of low er-carboh ydrate dietary patterns for health and disease-risk management. He has published o v er 100 scientific papers and is the co-author of the number-one bestselling book The CSIRO L ow-c arb Diet , as well as CSIRO Lo w-carb Ev ery Day , CSIRO Lo w-carb Diet Quick & Easy and CSIRO Protein Plus . With more than 20 ye ars experi ence wo rking in the health and researc h industry , she has ex tensive clinical nutrition ex pertise in diet and specialised food design for c omplex clinical trials and the dev elopment of community we ight management and chronic disease pr ogram s, specialising in obesity , type 2 diabet es and metabolic w eight-los s sur gery . She has a PhD in nutrition and disease and e xpertise in designing clinical and community- based trials in acco rdance w ith International Conferenc e on Harmonisation Good Clinical Pr actice guidelines. Dr Luscombe- Marsh also has ex pertise in conducting high-quality sy stematic revi ews to provi de evidenc e for gener al le vel health claims on food packaging. Her collective researc h has contribute d substantially to kno wledge about the effects of foods/ di etary patterns, particularly those high in pr otein a nd low in carbohyd rate on outcomes includi ng appetite, body c omposition, phy sical function, hospitalisations, card io-metabolic risk and quality of life, in y oung an d older adults. Dr Luscombe-Marsh has authore d more than 63 peer-re viewe d papers and three book chapt ers, and has re ceive d sev eral award s in reco gnition of the nov elty and impact of her work. She is pas sionate about c ontributing her expertise to assist industries to inno vate and is a vo luntary board member of Meals on Wheels South Austr alia. P RO F ESSOR C A MPBE LL THOMPSO N Professor Campbell Thompson heads the Ac ute Medicine Unit at the Royal Adelaide Hospital wher e he also w orks in the outpat ients department as a senior consultant managing patients with obesity and diabet es. He tra ined in Sydn ey and Oxf ord in the ar eas of kidne y medicine and gener al medicine and has ov er 30 y ears e xperienc e performing clinical metabolic r esearc h examin ing fat deposition and muscle metabolism in health and disease. Betw een 2012 and 20 14, the CSIRO conducted a decis ive r esearc h study funded by Austral ias national gov erning health body , the National Health and Medical Researc h Council of Austr alia (NHMRC), into the effects of a lo w-carb d iet, the results of which ha ve had extr emely positiv e impli cations for people living with type 2 diabete s. Participants who adopted a lo w-carb d iet repr esenting an ener gy-con trolled, nutritionally complete eating plan, low er in carboh ydrate with higher proportions of pr otein a nd healthy fa ts combined with a tailor ed ex erci se progra m, wer e able to reduce their relianc e on diabetes m edication by an averag e of 40 per cent, substantially impr ove t heir blood sugar contro l, and achiev e signif icant weight los s. Furthermore , the low -carb diet achiev ed gr eater blood glucose contr ol, diabete s medication reduction and impr oveme nts in heart health, compare d with the traditionally r ecommend ed higher- carbohyd rate (u nrefined), moder ate-pr otein, low-fat diet. This low-carb diet and lifestyle approach has since been published as The CSIRO Low-carb Di et , in a series of three books, all of them bestsellers.
