Foreword

BY HOLLI YEOH

Garter stitch is the first stitch pattern we learn as knitters. As a novice, I was eager to learn new stitches and quickly discarded garter stitch; I thought it was a little too rustic for my taste. I much preferred the smooth surface of stockinette stitch, which I felt was more polished and refined.

As an experienced knitter and designer, I now see the beauty and sophistication in garter stitch. Ive enjoyed revisiting it for its texture and mathematical genius. Ill often use it to quietly offset other stitch patterns. It is beautifully humble and would never outshine the featured act.

When I use garter stitch as the main star in a design, its not brash or bold. The modest garter stitch simply lets its texture and lovely repetition sing out and take center stage.

I have enjoyed embracing garter stitch and marvel now at its simplicity, a simplicity belied by its ability to create stunning designs.

In this book, you, too, will discover the beauty of garter stitch. These designs will give you the pleasure of creating beautiful things with the simplest of stitches.

Garter stitch provides just the right accent for any type of project. It creates a fabric that lies flat, so its perfect for hems and cuffs, as in Kristen TenDykes Just Peachy Saddle Shoulder Cardigan. A small amount of garter stitch adds visual interest while maintaining clean lines, as in Toby Roxane Barnas Asymmetrical Cropped Jacket. It even makes a striking design element, as in Megan Elyse Williams Flapper Cloche.

Be True Fingerless Mitts

DESIGNED BY JENNIE SANTOPIETRO

These playful mitts are knit in the round, beginning with a cozy garter stitch cuff that is whittled down to a pair of arrows worked on the back of the hand and on the palm. No matter which size you choose, these easy mitts are so quick to knit, youll want to make a pair for every guy and gal on your gift list.
