Preface
This volume provides an introduction to the analysis, understanding and appreciation of southwestern weaving for the interested student of textiles. Three weaving culturesthe prehistoric and historic Pueblo, the Spanish Colonial, and the Navajoleft their individual and collective impact on the development of the southwestern weaving tradition that continues to the present.
Joe Ben Wheat, Curator Emeritus of the University of Colorado Museum, has developed the museum's southwestern textile collection into one of the most significant research collections in the world and, with visits to other collections, has studied more historic southwestern textiles than any other scholar.
Ann Lane Hedlund began studying the weaving and textiles of the Southwest with Joe Ben Wheat in 1973 and received her doctoral degree from the University of Colorado in 1983. Her own careful scholarship, while more often focused on modern weaving on the Navajo Reservation, reflects Joe Ben's thoughtful mentoring and teaching. As a faculty member and director of the museum studies program at Arizona State University and, fortunately for us, as a research associate at the University of Colorado Museum, Ann is influencing a new generation of students.
In the fall of 1987, Joe's infectious interest in textile research led to the formation of a museum studies seminar focused on the development of a southwestern textile exhibition that would emphasize research methodology as well as aesthetic appreciation of the textiles. The course was organized by Diana Leonard and myself. Many of the students enrolled in the seminar participated in the implementation of the exhibition and have continued in related activities such as dye analysis and collection documentation.
