Introduction
My long quest to research the state parks across the United States is complete! It began ten years ago, after I'd written two pilots' guides to the national parks. As much as I would like to have had the opportunity, at no point did I ever even attempt to visit all the state parks in any state except for Colorado, my home state. There are simply too many of them.
Instead, I visited all fifty states and my explorations were determined by my mode of arrival. When traveling via commercial airline, Warren and I explored many representative state parks in a rental car or recreational vehicle. Other trips were made in a private plane in which we often carried our porta-bicycles for ground transportation. Still others were done in our travel trailer. For this reason, I've included information on the camping facilities and airports that serve the various parks.
Many of the parks are truly destinations in themselves, with more to do than we had time for. Others were used more as camping and jumping-off points from which we made day trips to visit the many local attractions.
I found the Southern states to be a gold mine for history lovers. The Civil War had a tremendous impact upon the land and its people, and many of the battlefields have been preserved as either national or state parks. Visitors can also tour many historic homes and mansions, and enjoy some magnificent gardens.
One of the best ways to see the South up close is on foot or from the seat of a bicycle. I'll not soon forget the beautiful bike ride we took to Jamestown and Williamsburg, nor the one out of Bryson City near the Smoky Mountains. There's something about breathing in the moistness of a forest or drinking in the salty ocean air that makes me feel so wonderfully alive.
Hiking in the South is very different from what I'm used to at home in the West, where we have more rugged mountains and more pronounced seasonal changes. The South has a much longer growing season than we do in the Rocky Mountains, and it's such a treat for us "Snowbirds" to visitparticularly in the spring, when the azalea, rhododendron, and dogwood are in full bloom. However, I must confess that my favorite time of the year is fall, when the colors are so vibrant and breathtaking. Aspen trees out West are colorful, to be sure, but
