  • tablespoons butter
  • package (8 oz) sliced fresh mushrooms
  • tablespoons soy sauce
  • large garlic cloves, sliced or finely chopped
  • lb lean (at least 80%) ground beef
  • teaspoon garlic powder
  • teaspoon salt
  • teaspoon pepper
  • slices Swiss cheese
  • burger buns, split
  • medium tomatoes, sliced
  • medium onion, sliced

Heat gas or charcoal grill. In 12-inch nonstick skillet, melt butter over medium-high heat. Add mushrooms, soy sauce and garlic; cook until mushrooms are tender and liquid evaporates. Set aside; keep warm.

Shape beef into 6 (-inch-thick) patties. Sprinkle with garlic powder, salt and pepper. Place patties on grill over medium heat. Cover grill; cook 10 to 12 minutes, turning once, until meat thermometer inserted in center of patties reads 160F. Place cheese slices on top of burgers during last 1 to 2 minutes of cooking time. Cover and cook until cheese is melted.

Place burgers in buns. Divide cooked mushrooms evenly over burgers. Top with tomatoes and onion.

  • slices bacon, crisply cooked, drippings reserved
  • large sweet onions, thinly sliced (about 1 lb)
  • bottle (12 oz) pilsner-style beer
  • lb lean (at least 80%) ground beef
  • teaspoon salt
  • teaspoon pepper
  • slices (about oz each) Cheddar or American cheese
  • leaves red leaf lettuce or red romaine lettuce
  • slices tomato
  • kaiser rolls or crusty rolls, split

In 10-inch skillet, heat 1 tablespoon bacon drippings over medium-high heat. Add onions; cook about 15 minutes, stirring frequently, until softened.
