Keep Invites Simple
When you are getting the invitations ready, theres no need to add more information than necessary. Include the date, time, place (address), if food or dinner will be served and who the guest of honor is. If a costume is needed, add that too.
Choose to have invitees RSVP, or you can RSVP regrets onlythis will depend on the group that is invited. And of course, if it is a surprise, be sure to include that! Keep a list handy so that you can note who has responded quickly and accurately.
HushIts a Secret!
Surprise parties are always fun but can be a little extra work because you need to keep the party a secret! But remember, some people do not like surprises, so consider this when you are planning. If you decide on a surprise, be sure to let everyone invited know in advance so they can help you keep the secret.
Fun Favors
At the end of your party, have party favors ready for all attendees. Use the theme of the party as a guide. The favors can be as simple as candies in a small container in the colors of the party or small homemade breads in seasonal flavors.
If you are throwing a , the favors could be dinosaur puzzles from the dollar store.
Party Planning 101
A bit of simple planning ensures your guests will have fun and make fabulous memories. Dont forget to take lots of pictures!
- Pick a theme: This sets the tone for the party and is a good starting point when planning. First, consider the birthday person. Does he or she have hobbies, favorite food or enjoy certain places, games, etc.? If the party is for a child, think about favorite animals, toys, characters or activities. Sometimes you can play games with a child, sparking their imagination for what would be a great theme for the party and might also lead you to pick a location where the party could be held. In this book, we provide some parties that are easy to put together or can be used as inspiration.
- Select a date, time and location: The place can be anywhere from your home or backyard to a fancy restaurant, a favorite pizza place or even a sliding hill! Use your imagination and the seasons as a guide. You might want to have an autumn harvest birthday party at an apple orchard or a party at the beach in the hot summer. Have you ever considered a winter skiing or sliding party? If you do plan for an outdoor party, try to have an alternate location inside or use a tent in case the weather does not cooperate. Make sure that the date and time are convenient for your guest of honor before moving forward!
- Develop a guest list and number of guests: Consider the birthday person and who they might like to include. Its okay to ask the person if you are in doubt so that you dont miss someone who should be included.
- Send invitations 2 to 3 weeks ahead: They can be printed invites or, if you know attendees well, e-mail is fine too. If you send printed invites, your e-mail can be used for the RSVP, so be sure to add it. In some situations, it is okay to invite guests by phone, but a printed invite is always a good reminder for people.
- Decide on activities: Its always fun to have things to do that work with your theme. For instance, if you are having a for a child, you might plan a treasure hunt with prizes as the treasure.
