Original Chex Party Mix
Prep Time: 10 Minutes Start to Finish: 1 Hour 25 Minutes Makes 24 servings ( cup each)
Originally published on a cereal box in 1952, the new twist was a sweet and spicy change of pace that could be served for any gathering. This recipe is probably one of our all-time most requested recipes. It is so popular that it was made into a ready-to-eat snack product available at most grocery stores.
- 6 tablespoons butter
- 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoons seasoned salt
- teaspoon garlic powder
- teaspoon onion powder
- 3 cups Corn Chex cereal
- 3 cups Rice Chex cereal
- 3 cups Wheat Chex cereal
- 1 cup mixed nuts
- 1 cup small pretzel twists
- 1 cup miniature garlic-flavor bagel chips or regular-size bagel chips, broken into 1-inch pieces
Heat oven to 250F. In ungreased large roasting pan, melt butter in oven. Stir in Worcestershire sauce, seasoned salt, garlic powder and onion powder. Gradually stir in remaining ingredients until evenly coated.
Bake uncovered 1 hour, stirring every 15 minutes. Spread on paper towels; cool completely, about 15 minutes. Store in tightly covered container in refrigerator up to 2 weeks.

Microwave Directions: In large microwavable bowl, microwave butter uncovered on High about 40 seconds or until melted. Stir in Worcestershire sauce, seasoned salt, garlic powder and onion powder. Gradually stir in remaining ingredients until evenly coated. Microwave uncovered on High 5 to 6 minutes, stirring thoroughly every 2 minutes. Spread on paper towels; cool completely, about 15 minutes. Store in tightly covered container.
Lighter Directions: For 90 calories and 2 grams of fat per serving, decrease butter to 3 tablespoons, omit mixed nuts and use fat-free bagel chips.
Tip Create your own Chex mix! Why not try using all one type of nut such as almonds, peanuts or cashews? Or, use just one or two varieties of cereal instead of all three. We love the pretzel twists and bagel chips, but tiny cheese crackers or small corn chips are nice substitutes.
