For Jaden, Lila, Serena, and Ari;
all the children of the Earth;
and our brother and sister animals.
In the beginning of all things, wisdom and
knowledge were with the animals, for Tirawa,
the One Above, did not speak directly to man.
He sent certain animals to tell men that he
showed himself through the beasts, and that
from them, and from the stars and the sun
and the moon should man learn. Tirawa
spoke to man through his works
LETAKOTS-LESA, EAGLE CHIEF, PAWNEE INDIANS
Lots of people talk to animals . Not very
many listen, though . Thats the problem.

Following the publication of the best-selling Animal Spirit Guides: An Easy-to-Use Handbook for Identifying and Understanding Your Power Animals and Animal Spirit Helpers, several people suggested that I create a smaller pocket-sized version, one they could carry in their purses, handbags, or cars. This would give readers an even more convenient and accessible way to interpret the messages and meanings of any spirit animals they encounter. The original book has proven extremely valuable for this purpose, and this condensed, smaller version will make it even more user-friendly.
It was apparent that I would have to do some serious editing to accomplish this, so I set out to determine which parts to keep and which ones to eliminate. There were some tough decisions to make, as I didnt want to cut out anything that would diminish the effectiveness of the material. I knew that it was necessary to focus on the main purpose of creating an abridged version, which is to produce something that would be easy to carry around yet still helpful in discerning messages from spirit animals. I also realized that if individuals wanted more elaborate information, they could turn to the original.
So what you have in your hands is a work that contains the essence of Animal Spirit Guides, one that will accomplish the same fundamental purpose: to identify and understand spirit helpers that show up in animal form.
Here are the modifications that Ive made to the original:
Ive eliminated a few of the spirit animals represented in the original, such as Aardvark and Jackal, as they were rarely, if ever, referenced (of course, these remain in the original book).
Ive reorganized the sequence of animals so it will make it easier to find the one youre looking for by placing subcategories of popular animals with some of their common variations. For instance, the heading for Owl now has the subheadings of Barn Owl, Barred Owl, Great Horned Owl, Screech Owl, Short-Eared Owl, and Snowy Owl. I suggest you read the main heading first, then the information on the more specific type of spirit animal. Those that fall under the main category will share similar meanings as the primary spirit animal, but a specific type may have a special message particular to that animals medicine.
