Acknowledgments
Some of the material in this book appeared in a somewhat different form in the articles "Thinking About the Baby: Gender and Divisions of Infant Care," published in 1996 in Social Problems, and "Contextualizing the Employment Decisions of New Mothers," published in 1997 in a special issue of Qualitative Sociology on families and social policy.
I am very grateful to the parents who agreed to talk with me about their transitions into motherhood and fatherhood. This book wouldn't exist without them, and I appreciate the generosity and thoughtfulness with which they shared their time and experiences.
This book began as a doctoral dissertation guided by Glenna Spitze, Karyn Loscocco, and Jim Zetka. I appreciate all three of them for sharing their talents and wisdom throughout my years as a graduate student at the State University of New York at Albany and beyond. Thank you to Glenna also for encouraging me to find my own voice as a sociologist and for being my friend. Karyn's intelligence and understanding enhance my work and my life.
I am also grateful to all of the members of the Department of Sociology, Anthropology, and Social Work at Skidmore College as well as other colleagues around the college for their support and encouragement. Thank you to Susan Bender, Kate Berheide, John Brueggemann, Gerry Erchak, Bill Fox, and Pat Oles for helpful advice on this project.
Thanks also to Michael Ames at Temple University Press for his editorial insight and to Ronnie Steinberg and other reviewers

unknown to me for their constructive readings of previous drafts of this book.
Thank you to my parents, Joyce and Richard Walzer, who got me into the world and have been there for me through thick and thin. My brother, Andy, is the quintessential comrade. My sister, Janet, has performed every function a sister, friend, and editor can perform, and for me defines the term "unconditional love."
Thank you to my friends.
