Introduction Why Enter The Healthcare Field?
The healthcare industry is growing at an enormous rate, creating a wealth of entry-level positions. Currently, approximately nine million individuals are employed as healthcare workers, and the healthcare industry is expected to produce approximately four million more jobs by the year 2005. This is almost double the rate of growth of all other (non-farm) wage and salary employment.
There are many ways to break into the healthcare field. This book tells you about the hottest entry-level positions and how you can land great jobs in these areas. High entry-level pay and rapid pay increases make employment in the healthcare field quite inviting. Most entry-level positions begin at or near the $15,000 (nursing aide) to $30,000 (surgical tech) a year range, with training programs ranging from three months to two years. You can obtain any of the jobs discussed in this book without getting a four-year college degree, and some require as little as a three-month certificate program. The healthcare field offers a wide range of

choices; this book gives you the information you need to select the healthcare career and training program that are right for you.
In chapter one you'll get an inside look at the hottest healthcare jobs, specific job descriptions, typical salaries, advancement opportunities, hiring trends, and the skills needed for each job. Then there's a step-by-step checklist for entering and succeeding in the healthcare field. You'll find out the difference between working in a hospital setting and an outpatient center and learn about other types of employers and their typical hiring procedures.
Chapter two tells you why you need formal training and how to select and evaluate training programs near you. You'll find sample courses that are taught in actual training programs for each of the hottest entry-level job titles in this book. These course descriptions can help you decide what occupation is right for you and how long you need to go to school for each one. When you talk to admissions counselors in training programs you're considering, you can use the checklist in chapter two to ask tough questions that will help you evaluate the quality of the program. Sample course descriptions show you what to look for in each training program. There also are tips on how to get the most out of your training program, such as how to study for exams, take notes in class, and network with other students.
The directory of healthcare training programs in chapter three includes a representative listing of schools by city, state, and job title so you can look up the training programs in your area. If you're considering moving to a new city, you can check that city's programs too. All school listings include name, address, and phone number so you can contact each school directly to get more information and application forms.
