Introduction Why Enter the Law Enforcement Field?
Law enforcement is one of the hottest career fields around, especially if you are looking for work as a police officer, corrections officer, or special agent. In fact, the U.S. Department of Labor estimates that opportunities in some of these law enforcement career fields will grow faster than the average for all other occupations in the U.S. through the year 2005. Not a bad forecast if you are just starting your career search or considering a move into law enforcement!
Entry-level positions in law enforcement are plentiful, but the competition for these jobs is tough. This book will not only give you the details about the fastest growing fields, it will also show you how to become "the competition" everyone else fears.
Chapter one gives you an idea of the typical salaries earned by local, state, and federal law enforcement professionals. You'll see what the beginning police officers in the fastest growing cities in America are earning, and you'll find out the salaries of federal agents and deputy sheriffs. The often-mysterious application process for law enforcement positions will be

explained, and tips for making it through the process will be provided. Chapter one contains detailed information about the jobs, training, and basic requirements for police officers, deputy sheriffs, and corrections officers. We've also included phone numbers and addresses for potential employers in the field. Plus, if you've ever wondered whether you are "the type" to carry a badge and a gun, you'll have an opportunity to take a quick suitability exam at the end of the chapter to help you answer that question. After the test, you'll get an insider's story on what it's like to be a police officer.
Chapter two will let you in on the details of federal employment, including information about the agencies who hire the largest numbers of federal officers, the salaries you can expect, the hiring processes, and points of contact. You'll get descriptions of numerous federal jobs, including information on the necessary qualifications and training. At the end of this chapter, you'll hear advice from a federal agent on how to prepare yourself for a law enforcement career.
One thing all employers of law enforcement have in common is their growing demand for college-educated applicants. Chapter three explores the reasons behind the demand, why an education will pay off in the end, and how to choose the right program of study. It also gives advice from professionals in the education and law enforcement community. To make your decision easier, we've included a list of colleges and universities that offer criminal justice-related programs, with notations marking the schools with ROTC scholarships. At the end of chapter three you'll hear advice from an admissions expert from one of the top criminal justice colleges in the country.
