Introduction Why Enter the Computer Field?
Whether you are looking for your first career or are considering a career change, this book is for you! Everywhere you look, you see newspapers and magazines stating that the best jobs now and in the future are in the computer field. There are many ways to break into the computer field, and this book shows you what the hottest computer technician positions are and how to get them, so you can get started in the growing computer field as soon as possible. The high rate of entry-level pay and the rate at which that pay increases make computer careers very inviting. This book will explain what the differences are between the four major categories of computer technicians: software technicians, hardware technicians, network technicians, and Internet technicians.
Most computer technician jobs can be obtained without a fouryear college degree, so you can get your career up and running in the shortest possible time. The training required for becoming a computer technician ranges from a two-year associate degree to certificate programs

that can be completed within a few weeks or months. The position of a computer technician differs from that of computer programmer, as computer programmers often need to complete a four-year bachelor's degree before they begin their careers. An office manager at a software development company says this about programmers:
Even though the programmers are in the technical computer field, they don't actually have much expertise installing and using desktop applications. I find that I am the one in the office who installs, upgrades, and maintains our office software.
Many computer technicians are known by other, related job titles. Since this field is relatively new, there isn't a consistent set of job titles throughout the industry. Some alternate job titles that refer to computer technicians are: desktop technician, network support personnel, software trouble-shooter, software engineer, LAN technician, computer service repair personnel, PC system support specialist, and the like. By the time you finish this book, you'll be able to easily recognize all the job titles that apply to computer technicians. This book gives you the information you need to select the computer technician career and training program that are right for you.
