This is a basic, practical and up-to-date manual for the evaluation and treatment of patients with thoracic surgical problems. Foreword to First Edition of a Manual of Thoracic Surgery
Chest Tubes and Chest Bottles has become widely circulated among students of thoracic and cardiovascular surgery, thoracic surgeons, and intensive care unit nurses. Dr. Arndt von Hippel is to be congratulated for having written the most understandable and comprehensive manuscript on pleural drainage systems.
This new Manual of Thoracic Surgery includes diagnosis and methods of treatment of thoracic surgical disorders as well as the principles of pleural drainage. The book is refreshing reading because instead of a review of the literature, it relates one man's personal experience in the thoracic surgical field. Many of the routine but essential concepts of thoracic surgery that surgeons rarely give thought to are presented.
Doctor von Hippel is to be complimented for expanding his earlier text by adding valuable information on management of thoracic surgical patients, without altering his unique lucid style.

Introduction to the Second Edition
The total of all information accumulated through recorded history has supposedly been doubled in the past eight years. Small wonder that exciting advances are the norm in our recently identified specialty. While recognizing the obvious difference between information and wisdom, there still seems ample justification for a completely rewritten and significantly expanded Manual of Thoracic Surgery. Those familiar with my earlier efforts (Chest Tubes and Chest Bottles, 1970, and A Manual of Thoracic Surgery, 1978; both published by Charles C. Thomas, Springfield, Illinois) will find that recent advances and refinements fit comfortably onto previously-developed concepts and techniques. Once again, this is a thoracic surgeon's report of what he has found to be safe, true, practical and rewarding. Those therapeutic possibilities that I have not explored (for lack of time, interest, skill or opportunity) are clearly differentiated from concepts which have been confirmed to my own satisfaction.
