Editing should be, especially in the case of old writers, a counseling rather than a collaborating task. The tendency of the writer-editor to collaborate is natural, but he should say to himself, How can I help this writer to say it better in his own style? and avoid How can I show him how I would write it, if it were my piece?
James Thurber
Although I wouldnt call myself an old writer (not yet, anyway, although old is a state I aspire to), the older I get the more I appreciate editors. Partly its a selfish thing, because a good editor makes me look like a better writer than I am. But its also a wonderful thing, because a good editor has the wondrous ability to take a piece of writing and, with a few judicious taps of the keyboardparticularly the Delete key!turn it into a piece of prose thats tight, easy to read, and (perhaps most importantly for a technical book) easy to understand.
With this book, I had the immense pleasure of working with several editors who are masters of their craft. Amanda Gambill was the books Project Editor, and she not only polished my paragraphs to a high shine, but also had a near-infinite number of excellent suggestions for improving the overall structure and flow of the material, and was loads of fun to work with, to boot. Kim Heusel was the books Senior Copy Editor, and his attention to the books details not only raised the level of the book, but was nothing short of breathtaking. Finally, I would be remiss if I didnt also mention Terri Edwards for her excellent pinch-editing, and last (but by no means least), Acquisitions Editor Stephanie McComb, who asked me to write this book. To all of you: thank you so much for a fantastic job. Lets do it again real soon!
Introduction
The iPhone is a success not because tens of millions of them have been sold (or, I should say, not only because tens of millions of them have been sold; thats a lot of phones!), but because the iPhone, in just a couple of years has reached the status of a cultural icon. Even people who dont care much for gadgets in general and cell phones in particular know about the iPhone. And for those of us who do care about gadgets, the iPhone elicits a kind of technological longing that can only be satisfied in one way: by buying one (or, as in my case, by buying four).
Part of the iPhones iconic status comes from its gorgeous design and remarkable interface, which makes all the standard tasks surfing, e-mailing, texting, scheduling, playing easy and intuitive. But just as an attractive face or an easygoing manner can hide a personality of complexity and depth, so too does the iPhone hide many of its most useful and interesting features.
