Acknowledgments
First, Id like to thank all the wily and lively record men Ive dealt with over the years, and especially those who specifically applied their expertise to this edition of the book. Instrumental in helping overhaul this edition has been my spiffy new board of advisors, namely Akim Boldireff, Stephen Braitman, Charles Szabla and Jack Cusenza. Their expertise was tantamount to me mounting the challenge to rock n roll through these massive tomes of scholarly reference. The ownership of Rics Collectibles here in Toronto has also graciously helped with prime LPs for me to shoot (camera, not gun!) to include as yummy visuals for your enjoyment.
Also, I also want to thank those people at Krause Publications who helped make this seventh edition a reality, namely Paul Kennedy, Dan Brownell, Sandi Morrison, Tammy Kuhnle and Peter Lindblad.
Thanks to John Ryan at The Bookcellar (bookcell@waupacaonline.net) in Waupaca, Wisconsin, for allowing us to take photos of hundreds of album covers.
Finally, last but not least, Id like to thank my family, who allow me this record n music obsession Im getting rid of some of it chipping away I promise!
The Goldmine Board of Advisors
Akim Boldireff
Akim Boldireff is widely considered Toronto, Canadas, foremost record man. Full time buyer, seller, appraiser, and Cheap Trick, Queen, and Sparks appreciator, Akim has collected and even sometimes resold many of the finest rock n roll artifacts that have passed through eastern Canada and the American Midwest. His biannual record shows in Toronto have, in recent years, eclipsed the London, Ontario, show as the best gatherings of vinyl obsessors in the nation, with more ambitious plans in the offing for the 2010 shows. For more information about buying and selling records, contact Akim at sonictemple@sympatico.ca.
Stephen Braitman
Stephen M.H. Braitman started writing about music as a young teenager in Los Angeles and has since reviewed and interviewed many of his favorite recording artists. He has been publisher and editor of numerous magazines and newspapers based in the San Francisco Bay Area, including Musicians News, City Arts Monthly, Key This Week, RollingYour Own, Entertainment News, and SF Live. Stephen was a Contributing Writer for Alternative Press for ten years, and wrote for many other publications, including the Los Angeles Times, Marin Independent Journal,New Times, Antique Trader, Sunset, San Francisco Chronicle, New YorkTimes, San Francisco Focus and Electronic Musician, among others. Stephen is a major collector of records and music paraphernalia, owning tens of thousands of LPs, CDs, 45s, photographs, magazines, and other memorabilia. His collection has been used as an archival resource for many organizations, including Rhino Records, Sundazed, Ace (U.K.), and MCA Records. He was a major contributor of posters and flyers for the publication of the popular book, The Art of Rock (Abbeville Press). Photographs from his archive are featured in the noted series by Paul Williams about Bob Dylans performing career. He writes a column on rare 45 rpm picture sleeves for Goldmine magazine. He also is a Music Analyst for Gracenote, Inc., the digital media company. And, he is a certified music appraiser. See www.musicappraisals.com for more information.
Jack Cusenza
Jack Cusenza is a pure collector, an acquirer, having never sold or traded any music items (approximately 99 percent vinyl), memorabilia, or related treasures, but that may change in the future. For many years his interest has stayed with the music that he began to enjoy and buy in the early 60s with a focus on 50s and 60s rock, which hes expanded in the past 20 years to include a large portion of the 70s and some artists from the 80s. Eventually and in stages, Jack has added much jazz, country and western, pop and soundtrack recordings to his vast Michigan-based collection, along with the odd bootleg, picture disc and promotional item. Surprisingly, Jack has never purchased anything online, instead normally obtaining items (mainly LPs and 45s) weekly from an established network of contacts, vendors, and people who locally reach out to him. That does not rule out trips to several of his favorite shops outside Michigan. Jack is an enthusiastic purchaser of all things record-related through Michigan and environs. He can be reached at myvinyltunes@aol.com.
