READ THIS IMPORTANT SAFETY NOTICE
To prevent accidents, keep safety in mind while you work. Use the safety guards installed on power equipment; they are for your protection.
When working on power equipment, keep fingers away from saw blades, wear safety goggles to prevent injuries from flying wood chips and sawdust, wear hearing protection and consider installing a dust vacuum to reduce the amount of airborne sawdust in your woodshop.
Don't wear loose clothing, such as neckties or shirts with loose sleeves, or jewelry, such as rings, necklaces or bracelets, when working on power equipment. Tie back long hair to prevent it from getting caught in your equipment.
People who are sensitive to certain chemicals should check the chemical content of any product before using it.
Due to the variability of local conditions, construction materials, skill levels, etc., neither the author nor Popular Woodworking Books assumes any responsibility for any accidents, injuries, damages or other losses incurred resulting from the material presented in this book.
The authors and editors who compiled this book have tried to make the contents as accurate and correct as possible. Plans, illustrations, photographs and text have been carefully checked. All instructions, plans and projects should be carefully read, studied and understood before beginning construction.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Graham McCulloch has been a woodworker for close to 65 years having just turned 75 (at this writing). With this one, Graham now has five woodworking books under his belt the last of which is The Woodworker's Illustrated Encyclopedia.
Graham found his love for making sawdust at the age of 10 in grade school in Montreal. Back then it was called sloyd and he quickly developed a love for the craft. Later, the author became an architectural designer creating a vast number of furniture pieces and cabinetry in Montreal.
Nova Scotia always had a special place in his heart and after many visits Down Home to visit relatives; Graham made the move in 1979. Settling in Halifax he opened a trade show exhibit design and construction business.
Graham continued the business for many years until he decided to retire. He was very successful in all of his endeavors except for the last one. As a retiree, Graham is an absolute failure. Designing and furniture building is his passion and it is difficult to give it up. Graham is a Director for the Atlantic Woodworker's Association and a member of the Nova Scotia Federation of Anglers and Hunters and is an avid photographer. He now lives with his wife in a Halifax suburb.
Graham continues to write about woodworking in a bi-weekly column on his website at http://www.shortcuts.ns.ca and for the Canadian Woodworking and Home Improvement magazine as well as The Contractor's Desk Magazine.
DEDICATION
As always, this book is dedicated to Gwen, my wife, my love.
And, to my many friends here in Halifax, Nova Scotia that include Bryan and Jackie, Fred and Linda, Rex and Bev, Lynn and Kenny, Rob, Ken, Carter, John and Judy, Tony and Sally, Ross, Ron and more whose names escape me right now.
Special thanks go out to Wilf (Woody) Woods for his assistance with the many photographs seen in the book. We spent many hours in my shop setting up the shots, doing the lighting and then the final cropping.
Black & Decker Canada also deserves my gratitude; B&D is the parent company of DeWalt, Delta and Porter-Cable. Black & Decker supplied all of the power tools that are illustrated in the book.
INTRODUCTION
The Random House Dictionary definition:
Shortcuts 1) A shorter or quicker way or route. 2) Any method that cuts down time and energy.
Graham McCulloch's definition:
ShortcutsEasier and more efficient ways to achieve excellent results.
JigA shop-made device designed to assist in the making of accurate repetitive work.
Having been a woodworker both as an amateur and a professional for over 60 years, I have learned and/or developed a long list of shortcuts that have helped me and my fellow woodworkers save time, material and effort to achieve our final results.
Before the days of the computer I used to write or type my newly learned or discovered shortcuts on 3 5 recipe cards and file them in a steel file box on my workbench. The cards were filed alphabetically according to the tool that they were used for. Later, with the introduction of the home computer, these cards were then transcribed onto floppy discs. It was then that I realized that perhaps there are other woodworkers out there that would like to share in my collection.
