PART ONE
THE TRUTH ABOUT ROSWELL
CHAPTER I
When I was a tall skinny little redheaded boy growing up in Geneva, Ohio, I had a best friend named David who lived down the road from me. David was a short stocky farm boy with a ruddy complexion, a real country boy.
In the summer, David and I would take turns spending the night at each others house, but we usually slept outdoors because we loved to gaze up at the stars in the night sky. On Friday nights, David would stay at my house. But on Saturday nights, I would spend the night at Davids house so I could go to church with David on Sunday mornings.
David and his family were devout Baptists and very loving people. They always let me know that I was welcome in their home, especially when I was having trouble with my alcoholic father. Then one Sunday morning, David and his family brought me to church and on that day, at the age of eight, I gave my life to God.
Because David was willing to share his life and his faith with me, my life was changed forever. And for that I will always be grateful to David. But there was one more thing that David shared with me: His first encounter with a UFO.
* * *
It was a beautiful clear night when David and I set up our sleeping bags in my front yard. The moon was almost full, the air was warm, and a gentle breeze was blowing from the north. We were in paradise. We had all the gear that was necessary for two young boys to enjoy a fun filled summer night of camping: flashlights, comic books, soda pop, and Pringles potato chips.
After we finished setting everything up, I decided to open my can of Pringles and have myself a snack.
Hey quit hogging all the chips, Gene!
What are you talking about? These are my chips; you already ate yours, David!
Oh Yeah! I forgot.
Hey, David. Ill trade you five potato chips for one of your comic books.
How about half a can?
No way, David!
Then Ill fight you for it! David said as he grabbed the can and tried to wrestle it away from me.
David loved to wrestle and fight and would use any excuse to start a wrestling match with me even though he would never win. That is what I admired most about him. You see, most people give up after they lose and then they stop believing in themselves, but not David. No matter how many times he failed at something, he never made excuses, never gave up, and always believed he could do it the next time. He was truly an incredible boy. The toughest and most dedicated boy I have ever known. Nothing could scare him, at least nothing from this world.
As David and I continued to fight over the can of chips, I happened to notice a strange object hovering in the sky above us. The mysterious object distracted me from my task just long enough for David to catch me off guard and throw me to the ground.
David! I said with extreme excitement. Look up in the sky!
Stop trying to trick me, David replied as he kept on fighting and tried to pin me. You know that I am going to get you this time!
David, stop! Dont you see it?
Yeah! Yeah! Yeah! See what?
The object in the sky.
What object? David said as he finally realized that I wasnt playing around.
Behind the house hovering over the trees in the backyard! I screamed as I pointed to the glowing visitor in the night sky.
David took a look over his shoulder at the spaceship and then he released his grip on me.
Wow! David said as he got up from the ground and then reached out his hand to help me up. Lets get a closer look.
You first, I said with nervous apprehension.
Come on! yelled David as he bolted his way into the backyard to take a closer look with me following close behind.
The ship was twice the size of the moon and it looked like the planet Saturn with bright blue rings encircling a fiery orange globe. The awesome ball of fire stood motionless in the clear sky for several minutes without making a sound just a few hundred feet above the woods that were behind my house. I stood absolutely still until the UFO took off, like a lightning bolt, straight up into outer space.
Did you see that? I said as I waited for Davids reply, but there was no answer. I turned quickly around to see why he wasnt answering me, but there was no one there . David was gone!
His sleeping bag and all of his stuff was still in its proper place, but there was no sign of David. I was terrified and I could feel the tears beginning to swell up in my eyes. Someone had taken my best friend from me and I did not know who.
I slowly gained the courage to investigate further. I grabbed my flashlight and entered the woods to look for clues as to what may have happened to my best friend.
Maybe David got scared and ran into the woods? I thought. Or maybe the strange spaceship left some evidence?
And so it came to pass that on that warm summer night in Ohio, I took my first steps onto the path that would eventually lead me to my purpose in life.
As I continued to search the woods for clues, I came across a large clearing in the woods; a clearing that I knew very well. Normally the grass in the clearing was as high as my waist, but tonight most of it was flat. It was as if someone or something had pushed all the grass down with a board. And yet, I couldnt help but notice that the fallen grass had left a circular pattern in the clearing. A pattern that was similar in size and shape to the strange object that I had seen in the sky.
Did the spaceship land in this clearing and then take off from here? I thought. Or did something else cause this phenomenon?
Suddenly, and without warning, I heard a loud humming noise over in the direction where I had last seen the strange flying object. It was getting louder and it seemed to be coming toward me.
I ran for the house as fast as I could, desperately trying to escape my fate, but it was too late. Someone was coming! I began to tremble as I ran toward the house and into my father.
I just got a call from Davids mother, said my father to me with the stern and agitated voice I knew so well. She says David came home and went straight to his room without saying a word. She wants to know what happened between you two tonight. Were you two fighting over the Pringles again? Is that it?
Yes, sir, I said with shaky knees and a small voice.
Get in the house! said my father with his hands on his hips and his veins bulging in his neck. You are grounded for a week!
Yes, sir, I said to my father as I ran past him and into the house as fast as I could.
When I got to my bedroom, I looked out the window and watched my father pick up my sleeping bag and throw it in the trash. Then he gathered Davids things and climbed into his truck and drove off with them. But as he was pulling out of the driveway, his headlights illuminated the backyard. And thats when I noticed the short gray creatures standing at the edge of the woods.
