Introduction: Too Hard to Believe

As intriguing as they might be, there are some stories of the paranormal that are just too hard for even the most open minded of us to believe. Yet we continue to wonder. There is something deep inside the consciousness of us all that makes us want to explore the boundaries of what we think is possible.

And the UFO phenomenon and the concept of extraterrestrial life is definitely a subject that tests the limits of how we currently see reality. Many have posited the idea that the discovery of alien life would completely shatter our preconceived notions and forever alter such fundamental human beliefs about religion, the purpose of existence, and our place in the great, grand scheme of things.

But one thing that has never been addressed is how the confirmed discovery of alien lifewhether these aliens be grey, green, or striped with yellow polka dotswould affect the shadowy world of UFO lore. If (and according to some scientists, its not a matter of if but a matter of when ) we discover a planet out there in the vast ocean of the cosmos that hosts an intelligent alien civilization, then how would this discovery impact the current claims of alien abduction?

Perhaps it wouldnt change things at all; perhaps the shadowy phenomenon would continue unabated even as our friendly and very real alien visitors were shaking hands with hosts on popular television shows. Perhaps our new alien buddies would even help us to investigate the nefarious activities of some space brother from another mother.

Of course, those who feel that current claims of alien abduction are nothing more than fantasy would assert that when the real ET comes knocking, these old anecdotal stories will fall away in the face of real alien contact. Will our most mysterious tales of alien encounters pass muster when the world achieves mundane everyday contact with aliens?

At any rate, most in the scientific community agree that whether extraterrestrials are friend, foe, or completely indifferent to us, belief in alien life will soon be a common, shared reality for us all. The fact that we share this universe with perhaps several other intelligent civilizations will become a part of everyday life, and will no longer be too hard to believe .

A Night to Remember

Husband and wife Steve and Dawn Hess had been married for a few years and were - photo 3

Husband and wife Steve and Dawn Hess had been married for a few years and were seeking a brief respite from the monotony of their daily routine. They wanted to recapture some of the excitement they had when they first met, before the responsibilities of paying the bills and raising two young children became the number one feature of their lives.

So they dropped their kids off with their grandparents, hitched up the camper and headed out to the scenic deserts of the American West for a night to remember. And October 21, 1989, did indeed turn out to be a night to remember for the couplefor reasons that they never would have expected.

They had just gotten the campfire going and were busy grilling hamburgers when Steve happened to notice out of the corner of his eye a formation of brilliantly illuminated objects hovering just above the horizon. Strangely, as soon as Steve turned to look more closely at the floating lights, they ducked down behind the nearby mountain range and disappeared from view.

Bizarrely, it seemed almost like the objects had intentionally moved out of sight as soon as he turned his head. Steve, being the rational person that he was, quickly decided that such a thing would be impossible, not only from a technical standpoint but psychologically as well. How could objects miles away zero in on him, watch him turn his head, and then purposefully dive behind a mountain range like they were playing an elaborate game of peek-a-boo?

And the even bigger question would be, why? As odd as the coincidence was, the ramifications of it were just too strange for Steve to entertain, so he turned back to flipping his hamburgers and forgot about the whole thing. But soon there would be a whole host of strange coincidences for him and Dawn to contend with. Later that night, after the two had finished their dinner, they were enjoying a couple of beers and staring up at the dark night sky, picking out constellations.

Then, as they kept a fixed gaze on one part of the starry sky, to their astonishment, one of the points of light which they had thought was part of a constellation broke away from the formation and began to travel across the sky! This sounds absurd, and you can only imagine how strange it would be to have your gaze fixed intently up at the Big Dipper and then see what you thought was part of its ladle fly off in the other direction!

However, the idea that UFOs would purposefully mimic constellations is a phenomenon that has been documented before. If it is true, it is yet another of the bizarre and decidedly alien behaviors of our ET visitors. As for Steve and Dawn Hess, they werent sure what they were looking at, but the whole thing was so disorienting they almost felt lightheaded. And perhaps this was the true purpose behind the aerial display in the first place.

Steve was at a loss to explain what they were witnessing in that isolated stretch of desert, but not wanting to frighten his wife, he merely told her, Oh that? Those are just weather balloons. Steves statement was unintentionally ironic, considering that one of the most infamous UFO encounters in the deserts of the American West was in Roswell, New Mexico, and involved a cover story with a weather balloon.

As the Hesses tell it, before this incident happened they had never even thought of the subject, so the connection was undoubtedly lost on them at that moment. Steve was just searching for any possible explanation for what they were seeing before them. But these objects certainly didnt behave like weather balloons, and soon, to the couples astonishment, more of the previously stationary points of light in the sky began moving as well.
