Southern Living Off the Eaten Path Second Helpings Morgan Murphy Yall, Ive eaten my way across the South. Ive pigged out at barbecue shacks, hamburger stands, meat-and-threes, taco trucks, juice bars, roadside dives, fish fries, juke joints, white-tablecloth restaurants, downtown diners, rustic old watering holes, trendy nightclubs, classic steak houses, and even a goat farm. I may be the only man in America who can qualify for workers comp based on my cholesterol. Know this: My picks here were researched the old-fashioned way, by finding restaurants based on word-of-mouth recommendations and covering 12,000 miles through 16 states and the District of Columbia. Ive eaten everything in this book at least once, and these are my very favorites. Yep, a lot of it is fried, covered in butter, dripping with some kind of delicious sauce.
This isnt a diet book. In fact, you may gain 30 pounds just reading it. But trust me, youll discover a lot of the Souths cutting-edge culinary delights in here, too. Not just the fried stuff. Many of the cooks, chefs, and kitchen wizards whose genius graces these pages are on the forefront of the culinary arts. It helps that our region is graced with a huge assortment of farms, fisheries, dairies, vineyards, and other food producers.
The South boasts excellent seafood and beef, amazing grains and citrus, and rich and rare produce of nearly every variety. Combined with a collision of English, Irish, Scottish, German, Caribbean, West African, French, Spanish, Native American, and Mexican history, that diversity gives the South a broad tapestry of restaurants you wont find anywhere else. So, dig into Second Helpingswhip up a healthy juice smoothie, a not-so-healthy (but delish) hot dog, the best banana pudding on the planet, or the grape and rosemary pizza I cant stop dreaming about. I promise, youre likely to love these recipes. Why? Theyre not just dishes I whipped up in my own kitchen. No, these are secrets revealed for the first time and cherished recipes that keep these featured restaurants full of customers.
Cant cook? Dont sweat it. This book works for the kitchen-impaired as well. Simply hop in the car, as I did, and visit these restaurants for yourself. Hey, and if you find a great new spot, please tell me about it. (My Twitter handle is @_morganmurphy.) And to make your road trip even more fun, Ive included some of my favorite hotels and soundtracks for you to enjoy along the way. 135 West 50th Street, New York, NY 10020 Southern Living is a registered trademark of Time Inc. 135 West 50th Street, New York, NY 10020 Southern Living is a registered trademark of Time Inc.

(254) 840-2027 Unless you're related to Jessica Simpson, happen to be Governor Perry's personal pie-fetcher, or were a member of the White House Press Corps from 2000 to 2008, you probably don't know about this little coffee shop 20 minutes from Waco. Donald Citrano's menu is full of Texas classics such as migas, big ol' pancakes, cornbread salad, and fried everything.
But forget all that. You're here for Valerie Citrano's pie. This little lady makes some big, big pies, adored by pop stars, potentates, and presidents. Valerie will tell you with a gleam in her eye who likes which pie, but take it from me, they're all delicious.
