Acknowledgments
We wouldnt be where we are without you. Thank you for using our patterns and reading our books. We love to see the way you incorporate our designs into the wonderful quilts you make. You keep us going.
Many people at C&T Publishing have been very good to us. First, Todd Hensley, CEO, welcomed us with open arms. Amy Marson, publisher, is always there to support us. Lynn Koolish, our editor, is the person we work with the most, and she has helped to make each and every book better. We appreciate the help that all of them have given to us.
It would be nice to be perfect, but we arent, so we are very grateful to Alison Schmidt, technical editor, who makes sure we get the details right, and to Jessica Jenkins, the production coordinator, who kept everything in this complicated book on track. Diane Pederson has an eye for photography that we greatly appreciate. April Mostek, this books designer, has given The Best-Ever Appliqu Sampler its distinctive appearance. We thank you all for your excellent efforts.
Dedications
From Becky
I believe that you really can learn something new every day. To do that you must let yourself be open to new ideas.
When presented with a new way to do something, it is easy to let your first thought be, No, I do it this way. I have been guilty of that myself. However, in the last few years I have made a concerted effort to be more open to new ideas. As a consequence, I have learned some new things (not all of them appliqu related).
I dedicate this book to the spirit of open-mindedness and sharing that is such an important part of every quilters life.
From Linda
My niece Magen is a marine biologist. She has a love for new adventures, like swimming with the whales, dolphins, and sharks (small, well-fed sharks). Magen loves the outdoors, hiking, rock climbing, being with the crew on a tall ship, and more. For the last few years Magen has worked on Catalina Island, teaching children about marine life.
I asked her once where this love of the outdoors came from. She looked at me and said, Aunt Linda, you have been taking me hiking since I was five.
I dedicate this book to everyone who loves a new adventure. Not all adventures have to be outside. I hope you will have many wonderful hours with the adventure of needle-turn appliqu in this book.
Introduction
Time flies! It has been six years since we last updated The New Appliqu Sampler, and the time has come to make changes and add more information. Although our techniques have not changed significantly over the years, we have more techniques and tips to share with you. You can even watch demonstrations of some of the techniques on our website, www.pieceocake.com. Whether you are new to appliqu or are very familiar with our techniques, this book is for you. Happy stitching!
Getting Started
Basic Supplies
FABRIC: All of the fabrics used in these quilts are 100% cotton. We recommend that you always prewash your cotton fabric.
DESIGN WALL: There are a variety of design wall options. No matter which you choose, this is a tool you need. Our design walls are made from 1-thick insulation foam that is available in 4 8 sheets. Use as many sheets as necessary to cover your space. They are easy to cut. We attached them to our walls with sheetrock screws. Beckys design wall is covered with white flannel; Lindas, with batting.
