Appliqu patterns are on pattern sheets (pages P1P9). Your blocks will be approximately 16 19 finished size. Each hexagon block is made of 6 block units. The size of your blocks is affected by your seam allowances and the accuracy of your cutting and piecing. Be consistent from block to block so that all the blocks are the same size.
Make templates and overlays for each block unit. The leaves and center hexagon are the same in each block. You can make these templates once and use them on every block. Press the backgrounds in half horizontally and vertically. Make a -long mark at each end of both pressed-in lines, at the edges of the block. Use the 60 ruler to fold the backgrounds into a triangle right side out.
Once folded, place them on your design wall to form each block. This step takes a little time but it will definitely help as you audition the appliqu pieces. Cut out the appliqu pieces with their turn-under allowances. Place the appliqu pieces on the backgrounds on your design wall. Use the overlays to place the appliqu pieces in the proper position or place them by eye. Audition Everything Dont stop the audition process with the blocks. Put the setting triangles and borders on the wall, as well as the fabric for the English paper pieced flowers. All of the parts of the quilt work together, and it is important to get it right before you begin sewing. Appliqu the block units. When your appliqu is complete, press the blocks on the wrong side. Measure 3 down from the horizontal center of the block unit. Measure carefully! Trim away the excess fabric from the bottom of the block unit.
Measure 7 up from the bottom of the block unit. Trim away the excess fabric from the top of the block unit. Step 7 Place a green block center strip, right sides together, centered over the bottom of the block unit. Sew it in place. Place a block accent strip, right sides together, centered over the top of the block. Step 9 There are 6 block units in each larger hexagonal block.
