As a broadcaster, my husband loves to share a good story. One of his favorites to tell is the story of our four-month ultrasound appointment during my second pregnancy. We were seeing a doctor in a posh, state-of-the-art office in Beverly Hills, California, where we would officially find out the gender of our nugget, who we had already named Ella James. Your baby is not cooperating! the doctor joked as he moved the ultrasound wand over my round belly while staring at a screen. He pressed down a little firmer, then exclaimed, Ah! Looks like you are having another boy!
My husband looked at me very, very surprised. He knew I had intuited we were having a girl and that the information that came through to me intuitively was simply never wrong. When intuition spoke, it spoke... and, by that point in my life, I had learned to listen. This moment was like many before, when my poor husband looked at me as I sat quietly, smiling lightly while I waited for the truth to reveal itself.
Maybe it was because of the quiet that had settled over the room, but for whatever reason (maybe his intuition), the doctor continued to probe and search, despite the fact that he had already determined the gender of our baby. Ah! he said again a few seconds later. Nope... you are having a girl!
I have been in touch with my intuition for as long as I can remember. When I was a very young child, my family lived overseas in Europe. Many of my earliest memories involved looking up and listening to conversations that adults were having while we walked on century-old cobblestone streets. Despite the fact that we were living abroad, I spoke English, and I did not verbally understand the German and French conversations the adults were having at first. What I began to understand was that I was able to derive information about these strangers despite our lack of verbal communication. I somehow knew what had happened, what was happening, and at times what was about to happen as well as how they were feeling and doing. As a child, I interpreted this as the sky or cobblestones around us talking to me, giving me information. As an adult, I understand that my intuition has been engaged since a young age, and its made life more rewarding (and understandable) ever since.
Intuition is a knowing. A deep, clear one. Some call it wisdom in truth, and some call it divinity at its finest. Intuition is simultaneously completely magical and exceptionally practical. It is both not of this world and yet centered completely within each and every one of us. Intuition empowers us to know ourselves and our body like no one else can. It empowers us to know others. Being intuitive can be one of the greatest joys in life; it keeps life rich and unexpected. It keeps us completely in the now.
In the pages that follow, we will walk through a step-by-step process that will help you hone your intuition and make it easier for you to hear, listen, understand, and connect with. We will look at how and why intuition works, based both on my own lifelong experience with it and through information that I have been given in the decade I have officially been doing intuitive readings for clients. Yet, at the same time, part of the magic of intuition is that its not completely tangible or explainable. Its just something that is. And a stellar trusted relationship can be born once we personally experience this. I feel this is one of the most beautiful parts of our intuitive experience.
We have lived in a research-based world for a long time, one where many people pooh-pooh ideas that cannot be proven empirically (yet). But, the true fact is, even the most scientific and logical person has experienced intuition at work, even if its something she or he is completely unable to explain. Intuition comes in both big and small ways. I would guess that you have at least one wondrous example of intuition in your own life already. There are also many small, regular occurrences of intuition that occur on a daily basis, which we are often not even aware of. Intuition is at work in those little moments like when we call a friend to check in, only to find out they were in need of a little love, or when we get a tug that we should leave for work a bit earlier than usual, only to find theres a traffic delay and we actually needed that extra time.
Although the intention of this book is to provide you with tools to wrangle your intuition and make it easier to access, its also important to understand that you are already intuitive. We all are. Its something thats built into each and every one of us. We might think of our intuition like our biceps. We all have them, and we all use them on a regular day-to-day basis. Some of us just spend more time stretching and strengthening them.
Strengthening your intuition will change your life. Our intuition is that part of us that already has the answers. When we listen to it, intuition will guide us along the life path that will be the most fulfilling and increasingly joyful. The positive ways in which intuition can transform our life are endlessphysically, relationally, financially, intellectually, and even professionally. Not only does intuition help unlock all these doors, but also, as we walk through the process that will lead to this enhanced intuition, we will inherently enrich our life physically, intellectually, emotionally, and spiritually. The whole process is one of the strongest examples of the beautiful, positive design of this universe we live in.
To let our intuition ring through more clearly, we often must first shed the emotional and old layers of our life that cover (not covet) this voice of knowing. Bettering our intuition also inherently fine-tunes and increases the levels of health and harmony in our life. Activating our intuition allows us to understand why we hold on to certain memories while it simultaneously adds more richness and meaning to our current life experience. This combination offers both personal and collective healinghealing that can better our life and even influence our DNA.
Its a big promise, I know. But thats the beauty of intuitiononce you unlock it, everything becomes possible.
Lets start at the very beginning. What is intuition? Put in its simplest terms, intuition is a knowing. But its a different kind of knowing than the purely physical or mental, academic knowledge we tend to focus on in the Western world. Intuition also draws upon the creative side of the mindthat part of the mind that is connected to all of creation. This is also known as the feminine or being side (or aspect) of our intellect. Unlike the more linear, logical part of the mind, intuition sees the wholeness of a situation or moment in time rather than one side or analytical perspective of it. Intuition is a knowing and wisdom that flows through us. It is an inner voice that, in order to hear it, we must quiet the mind.
In my experience, one of the biggest hurdles to accessing our intuition is believing that it exists and giving credence to those little nudges, signs, and insights that seem to come without logical explanation. Once we accept intuition as fact and begin to use it as a compass to guide us through life, its existence and its power are inescapable. And we gain astounding facts to prove its worth.
Intuition comes in many formsit can roar in like a tornado (like when you have a strong and sudden feeling that you shouldnt follow through with plans for no apparent reason, only to find out that you avoided a negative or dangerous situation) or arrive as a slight whisper (like when a friend youve lost contact with pops into your head, then calls later that same day). These can be classified as the loud or quiet knocks. Intuition may involve synchronicitywhen we see some sign that echoes a thought we were just having or speaks clearly to an issue at hand. It can even involve mediumship, which is essentially being attuned to the presence of those who have passed. Whether the repercussions are big or small, intuition can serve as a homing device through life that makes it easier for us to stay on a positive or northbound path. It ensures that were always moving forward. We can even think of it as a fun (yes, fun) walkie-talkie with the universe.
