Introduction:

Taking notes is something that we all do and most of us do it on a daily basis. When writing notes we generally reach for anything and everything that you can. It can be a piece of paper, notebook, post-it note or even the traditional cocktail napkin.

The digital age has taken the art of taking notes by leaps and bounds. With the introduction of computer technology, blogs, web pages, e-mail and texting the art of taking notes has become a lot easier. With your cell phone you can turn on the sound recorder and make a verbal note and save it for later. With your camera you can go and take a picture and send it to yourself in an e-mail with a sound file. Devices such as PDAs, Tablets, Cell phones and much more have led to the ability to take and store information at a moments notice.

The problem with all of these devices is that they all dont store all the information that we gather in one simple place. It is true that you can take notes, record video, audio and other files and store them for later retrieval but doing so takes a lot of effort.

So what if I was to tell you that there was a piece of software and web application that allowed you, no matter what device you were using to store all your information and notes in one convenient place. Well now there is and it is called Evernote.

Evernote can be found at http://www.evernote.com . From here you can download the software or access an account from many different devices and have access to all of your information.

In this book we will explore Evernote and all of its basic features. We will s how you what Evernote is, what it can do and why you will need to use it on a daily basis.

WHY WE WROTE THIS BOOK

We wrote this book in the hopes to give you the reader a basic understanding of what Evernote is and what it can do for you. In this book we will use simple terms and explanations so that if you have never used Evernote or even used a computer program before, be up and running and making full use of the software.

WHO WAS THIS BOOK WRITTEN FOR

This book was written for the individual or individuals who need a one stop solution for note taking. If you are a professional businessperson or if you are the mom at the grocery store this book was written for you. If you are someone who has used Evernote before and just need a quick step by step guide then this is the book for you.

Chapter 1

SO WHAT IS EVERNOTE

Evernote is in my opinion the ultimate note taking and collaboration application that you can use. Evernote allows you the end user to take notes, collaborate with others, share ideas, find information and much, much more with just a few clicks of the mouse or swipes of your finger.

Evernote can be found on the following web site. http://www.evernote.com . The application is free and one account can be accessed from an unlimited number of locations such as PC, Mac, Android, IPhone, Web and more. Evernote has a premium account that at the time of this writing is $4.99 a month or $49.99 a year. With the premium version you will have access to more advanced features but for the everyday users these features are not needed.

LETS GET STARTED

Okay, lets jump right in with both feet. The first thing that you will want to do is visit the Evernote web site by visiting http://www.evernote.com . From there you will see a button that says Download. Click on this link to get the software.

CREATING AN ACCOUNT

Once you download the software and install it, I downloaded my copy for the Android system; you will be required to create an account.

CHOOSE YOUR ACCOUNT TYPE

The first step is to choose your account type. At the time of this writing there are three account types Free, Premium and Business. For this book we will be focusing on the free account of Evernote.

In the Premium account you will get the ability to have 1 gig of file storage each month. What this means is that each month you will receive 1 gig of storage that accumulates. So if you have one gig of files in January you automatically get another 1 gig of storage in February which will be a total to 2 gigs of notes. You will get additional features such as the ability to password protect files and many other support and premium features.

The business account option is similar but it gives you the option of having 4 gigs of storage space compared to the 1 gig in the personal account as well as the option to collaborate with others.

Before choosing to pay for any account access it is strongly suggested that you first start with the free account, get your feet wet in the Evernote universe and once you know what it can do and what it will do for you, upgrade.

Creating an account is very simple. The only information that is required is a username and a password. The username will be your e-mail address. When creating your account make sure that you use a legitimate e-mail address. It can be an e-mail address that you dont really use or you can setup an e-mail account specifically for Evernote but you will need to have a real e-mail address that functions in order to create your account.
