Chapter 1: Why Master Evernote?
On the surface, it sounds like Evernote isjust a simple note taking application. There are hundreds of thoseavailable. So why dedicate an entire book to this one? The reasonis that this particular application can be so much more than just afew simple notes. Here are just some of the ways that usingEvernote can make your life better:
Sync your notes: the notes you make on your phonecan be easily synced up with the notes on your computer, on yourtablet, and on any other device you use. This helps you stayorganized and keep every scattered thought or idea you havetogether and sorted. You dont have to stress out about trying toremember where you left that one note you need right now. This isan ability you simply dont get with most of the other apps outthere on the market and you definitely wont get if you write itdown on a scrap of paper. You can even sync them across differentoperating systems so if you have an iPhone but use a PC instead ofa Mac, you wont have to worry about any syncing or conversionissues.
Share your notes: you can quickly and easily sharenotes or whole sets of notes (called notebooks) with anybody youlike. This is extremely useful in a number of situations. If yourea student, for example, you can easily exchange lecture notes withyour classmates. In the office, share notes with your coworkers sothat you can easily stay on the same page about a project you areworking on. Sharing and exchanging notes with Evernote makes iteasy to communicate and share ideas. Plus, its really easy to do.Save the effort of having to attach a file to an email or downloadan attachment you receive. You can streamline the whole process byjust sending and receiving all inside the Evernote application.
Attach pictures to your notes: the application ispicture enabled so that you can take a photo and attach it to yournote all within the Evernote application. Let the picture be a noteall its own or add some text to explain it. This is also great fordigitizing your paper files. Normally, this process would involvetaking a picture, attaching it to an email, opening that attachmenton your computer, downloading it to your computer, and then savingit to a folder. With Evernote, just take the picture then save thenote. Then, youre done! You can access that picture on any devicewith the Evernote app.
Attach audio to your notes: the app also has arecording feature so that you can make voice memos or attach audioto your notes right from inside the app. This feature alone has amillion different uses. It is especially convenient when you areusing the app on your phone and dont want to type an entire essaywith that tiny little touch screen keyboard. Just click record andsay it all in a minute or two. This is great for when you suddenlybecome inspired while youre on the go and dont want to riskforgetting your idea by the time you get to a computer to write itdown. Additionally, you could use this as a tool for interviews.Record the conversation with Evernote and then add your own textnotes afterward when you review the interview. Journalists andresearchers alike will appreciate that convenience. If you have anAndroid device, Evernote will transcribe the audio for you (and ifyou have ever transcribed audio before, you know what a blessingthat is).
Attach files to your notes: with Evernote, you caneasily attach files right to the note. Whether its a spreadsheet,an image, or an entire document, its easy to just add it rightinto the note. This can help you keep yourself organized and workwith your files in a way you simply cant otherwise. Not tomention, adding files to your notes in Evernote will give youaccess to those files from any device you are using. Never worryabout forgetting a file again when all of them are stored in youreasy to access Evernote notebooks.
Scan text in a photo: the Evernote app uses OpticalCharacter Recognition technology so that you can scan a photo withtext in it and convert it to a workable text document. This willsave you countless hours of hand copying the text from an imageyourself. For example, if youve got a lot of scanned documentsthat need to be made into writable documents, Evernote can takecare of that in a manner of minutes.
Set reminders: the app allows you to add remindersto your notes so that you can be notified about upcoming deadlinesor appointments. This feature is especially useful with your to dolists or in notes regarding a project or exam you need to preparefor by a specific deadline. Its a note taker, a calendar, and afriendly reminder all in one easy to use app!
Track your time: you can use Evernote to easily keeptrack of your productivity and how you spend your time. Many havefound that it is immensely useful to set up a notebook whose solepurpose is recording how you spend your time and every 15 to 30minutes, they add a note briefly describing what they have justbeen doing whether its checking email, browsing facebook, creatinga spreadsheet, or eating lunch. After a week of doing thisregularly, you can start to have a clear picture of how you useyour time and make modifications to be more productive. Compareweek by week progress easily and see how much your productivity hasimproved since you started tracking your time. It may seem tediousat first to make a note every 15 to 30 minutes but Evernote is soeasy to use and its really quite a quick process (especially ifyou just make a quick voice memo).
