Abstract
We develop classical results of naive set theory, mostly due to Georg Cantor.
Georg Cantor (18451918) discovered set theory. Prior to Cantor , people often took it to be paradoxical that there are sets which can be put into a bijective correspondence with a proper subset of themselves. For instance, there is a bijection from Picture 1 onto the set of all prime numbers. Hence, it seemed, on the one hand the set of all primes is smaller than Picture 2 , whereas on the other hand it is as big as Picture 3 .
Cantor s solution to this paradox was as follows. Let Picture 4 and Picture 5 be arbitrary sets. Define Picture 6 is smaller than or of the same size as Set theory exploring independence and truth - image 7 (or, Set theory exploring independence and truth - image 8 is not bigger than Set theory exploring independence and truth - image 9 ) as: there is an injection Set theory exploring independence and truth - image 10 . Write this as Picture 11 . Define Set theory exploring independence and truth - image 12 is of the same size as Set theory exploring independence and truth - image 13 as: there is a bijection Set theory exploring independence and truth - image 14 . Write this as Picture 15 . Obviously, Picture 16 implies Picture 17 . The theorem of Cantor Schrder Bernstein (cf. Theorem 1.4) will say that Picture 18 follows from Picture 19 and Picture 20 . We write Picture 21 if Picture 22 but not Set theory exploring independence and truth - image 23 .
Notice that if Set theory exploring independence and truth - image 24 , i.e., if there is an injection Set theory exploring independence and truth - image 25 , then there is a surjection Set theory exploring independence and truth - image 26 . This is clear if Picture 27 is already bijective. If not, then pick Set theory exploring independence and truth - image 28 (we may assume Set theory exploring independence and truth - image 29 to be nonempty). Define Set theory exploring independence and truth - image 30 by Set theory exploring independence and truth - image 31 , if Picture 32 is in the range of Set theory exploring independence and truth - image 33 and Set theory exploring independence and truth - image 34 otherwise.
Conversely, if Set theory exploring independence and truth - image 35 is surjective then there is an injection Set theory exploring independence and truth - image 36 , i.e., Picture 37 . This is shown by choosing for each Picture 38 some Picture 39 with Picture 40 and setting Picture 41 . This argument is in need of the Axiom of Choice, AC , which we shall present in the next chapter and discuss in detail later on.
To a certain extent, set theory is the study of the cardinality of arbitrary sets, i.e., of the relations Picture 42 and Picture 43 as defined above. The proof of the following theorem may be regarded as the birth of set theory.
Theorem 1.1 ( Cantor)
Picture 44
Proof
Picture 45 is trivial. We show that Picture 46 does not hold.
Assume that there is an injection from Picture 47 to Picture 48 , so that there is then also a surjection Set theory exploring independence and truth - image 49
