Contents

When I was completing my PhD in geophysics at Stanford University in 1976, I thought my biggest challenge was coordination of two careers. My husband needed two years to complete Stanfords combined JD and MBA program. To solve my short-term challenge, I arranged to continue at Stanford as a research associate. I wasnt concerned about the implications of the fact that I was the first woman to receive a PhD in geophysics from Stanford (January 1977). Naively, I thought that gender discrimination was no longer a problem.
