To the following knitters for all of their beautiful handworkif it werent for all of your help at the last minute, I would have been knitting swatches until the end of time. Anne Berk Gina Kanouse Simone Payment Annie Rota About the Author Sharon Turner is the author of Teach Yourself Visually Knitting, Teach Yourself Visually Knitting Design, Knitting Visual Quick Tips, Find Your Style and Knit It Too, and Monkeysuits: Sweaters and More to Knit for Kids. When her daughters were babies, Sharon published Monkeysuits, a line of knitting patterns for babies and children. She lives in Brooklyn, New York, and Hague, New York with her husband and three daughters. In Summer 2011, Sharon graduated from nursing school and became a registered nurse. Acknowledgments When Pam Mourouzisthe very talented Acquisitions Editor at Wiley Publishingand I first spoke about this Knitting Visual Stitches Encyclopedia, we agreed it would probably be pretty easy.

Once underway, it emerged as something more complex than originally envisioned. (And it didnt help that I was finishing up my last year of nursing school, and preparing for my licensure exam.) Throughout the entire process, Pam, and Donna Wright, Senior Project Editor Extraordinaire, worked diligently to see this intricate project through to fruition. And even though I got more and more behind, Donna and Pam never seemed to lose patience; instead, they always offered support and more time. Thank you, Pam, for the privilege of working on this book. And Donna, you deserve the highest commendation for deftly sorting the bits and pieces that trickled in (at too slow a pace), and for building a comprehensiveand comprehensiblefinished book out of it all. I am forever grateful to Kristi Porter, Technical Editor (and author of several knitting books herself), for sharing and applying her vast knitting and pattern-writing knowledge to ensure that this books patterns make sense.

Kristis remarkable ability to pay close attention to millions of tiny details while simultaneously maintaining a clear view of the big picture has been invaluable. Thank you, Kristi. Many knitters worked their fingers to the bone to fill these pages with colorful swatches. My dear friend, Brenda Adelson, devoted many of her evening hours to help create many of the knit swatches shown in the book. Another dear friend and Brooklyn neighbor, Yuki Sahara, knitted a zillion swatches and was always sure to point out errors or odd wording that could be confusing. Pam Mourouzis, who already has a full plate, also expertly knit many of the swatches shown and made sure to let everyone know how much she enjoyed it.

My sister Lauren (Doll) and my pal Kristen also knit some swatches when they werent distracted by their own busy lives, and Im so thankful to them for that. Isabel, my eldest daughter, also took time from her demanding school schedule to help out and knit a few swatches. Applause goes to Matt Bowen for photographing and re-photographing so many little knit squares so that they looked just right. Thanks also to Mary Louise Wiack for her eagle-eyed review early on; to Christina Stambaugh for expertly directing the production of this exhaustive project so that all of the details came together in one neat package; and to Wiley Publisher Cindy Kitchel for allowing me the opportunity to work on this intricate project. To my best advisor and husband Mark, and to our three delightful daughters Isabel, Matilda, and Phoebeyou are the best.

Introduction This encyclopedia offers 350 knitting stitches: simple knits and purls; intricate ribbed, bobbled, slipped, twisted, and cabled stitches; lace, edgings, and colorwork.

Use the book to explore new patterns, to practice unfamiliar techniques, or to design and create distinctive hand-knit sweaters, accessories, and items to decorate your home. Before You Begin Youll need to know that all of the stitch patterns come complete with a detailed color photo and clear, simple, stitch-by-stitch instructions. In addition, all but a few of the patterns are represented in chart form. (Refer to the Appendix to clarify stitch maneuvers and interpret the symbols and charts.) When applying the patterns to your own designs, knit a sample swatch (or two or three or four) to see if the stitch pattern has the right texture, weight, and drape for your project. The type of yarn you usethe fiber and how it is spunimpacts the outcome tremendously. Many pure wool yarns are elastic and have a lot of body.
