CONTENTS
Life is a funny thing. We never really stop to think about it because were too busy living it.
Living life.
There are lots of people doing that... well, kind of.
People are eating, sleeping, working, procreating, and driving. They are getting news on their phones, binge-watching shows, and drinking coffee to get through their days.
They are hustling to make a living, looking forward to vacations, and pushing their kids to buy into that same narrative so they can work hard and have a better life.
I guess we can call all of that living life, but lets take a moment and examine the root of these two words: live and life.
Live (the root of living)the primary definition in the dictionary for this is to remain alive.
At first glance it seems like a pretty low bar, but lets think about it. The statement implies an incredibly miraculous symphony of trillions of biological functions that have to work together in harmony and symbiosis with the trillions of other life forms around us to keep our bodies humming. It doesnt account for the spark of life or consciousness that imbues this meat suit that keeps the lights on, or at the very least is somehow aware that were alive.
This definition puts mere survival at center stage for us and, to be fair, that was the dominant theme for our species for centuries, before we got smarter and richer. We have neither huge fangs nor body armor, like many of the animals out there do. We grew brains and harnessed fire to gain some edge and survive in a pretty harsh environment with drought, predators, and marauding invaders from other tribes. If we made it, we would continue to live.
This definition of the verb live essentially means to continue to exist.
Where? Well, I guess here.
When? It must mean now.
If youre not here, like on this planet, then you are not livingat least not here.
And in terms of time, if youre not here right now, then you either existed in the past and are now dead or have not been born yet... neither of which would allow you to be here reading this book.
This may all sound trite, but I ask that you humor me. Its the very act of deconstructing what we take for granted that allows for cracks in the concretefor a glimpse into the deeper realm that weve been trained to look away from. In fact, were currently living at a time when many of the people stumbling around us are completely unconsciousHungry Ghosts as the Buddhists would call them. They are concerned with the superficial things in life and never stop to think about what this thing called life is really about.
Lets look at the word lifeanother throwaway word thats rooted in the deepest miracle of all.
Here are the top four definitions of life from Oxfords online dictionary:

a disaster that claimed the lives of 266 Americans
