welcome to the South Pacific
Remote, beautiful and culturally hospitable, these oft-dreamed-of islands are the place to enjoy the worlds whitest sands between your toes and its clearest waters at your doorstep.
The Dream
The South Pacific is synonymous with paradise. This lofty reputation began when the first European explorers returned to their home shores with tales of a heaven on earth, where the soil was fertile, life was simple and people were beautiful. And while these island nations have modernised since that time, their allure hasnt changed. Youll still find the bluest waters, smiling bronzed locals in flowery fabrics and humid, gardenia-scented air. But whats most amazing is how refreshingly untainted by tourism most regions are. Blame it on their remoteness or the price of getting here but few people who fantasise about the South Pacific ever actually go. This is a great gift to those who book a ticket to this magical place that generations have dreamed about.
Diversity
Even the biggest geography buffs crinkle their brows when it comes to this many islands. On a map all those little dots look the same and their many-vowelled names get lost on the tongue. But get to know these places and youll find diversity that would be fitting for any expanse of this size. Yes, there are Polynesian nations and Melanesian nations but within these headings are myriad languages, customs, histories and landscapes that make each island unique. No, its not just a homogenous spread of palm trees and warm ocean if you escape your resort youll find cultures and experiences as rich as coconut cream.
Ready for Action
Life moves slowly out here so its no wonder plop-yourself-on-the-beach-and-do- nothing holidays are popular. But what if you like action? This is the South Pacifics wildcard. Of course theres world-class surfing, snorkelling and diving but how about hiking to crumbling tiki (sacred)statues in the jungle, swimming with whales, trekking to the top of a volcano, rappelling down a waterfall or kayaking to forgotten beaches? Adventure travel has scarcely been tapped here and, other than a few mechanised experiences like jet boating in Fiji or 4WD tours, whats on offer is authentic, uncrowded and something youll never likely forget.
Hospitality
No one knows how to treat guests better than Melanesians and Polynesians. This doesnt mean theyll always be in top form working for minimum wage at a hotel can bring out the mediocre in the nicest of people but its their culture to generously offer the best of everything they have, be warm, gentle and make sure your stay is sublimely comfortable. There is pride that youll go home with a gigantic smile.

Diverse Paradise
Any of these countries could be that place on a Travel to Paradise poster that makes you want to leave your job and live in flip flops forever. But the South Pacific isnt just a homogenised string of palm trees and blue water. The cultures and landscapes that spread across the Pacific Oceans vastness hold an incredible diversity, from rugged atolls to mangrove-encircled high islands and from Euro-chic capitals to traditional tribes in jungles. Each island group is home to its own sort of wonderful.

Island Welcomes
A garland of flowers is one of the most simple yet beautiful offerings on the planet and no one gives out more of these than the people of the Pacific. Loudness and brashness are out, subtle hospitality and genuine goodwill are in. If they could give you the moon they would, so please dont ask for it. Theres a selfless beauty to island welcomes that feels untainted by the modern world. It doesnt pour out with fanfare but rather comes out slowly and naturally in return for a smile.

Whales in Tonga
Tonga is an important breeding ground for humpback whales, which migrate to its warm waters between June and October; its one of the few places in the world where you can swim with these magnificent creatures. They can be seen raising their young in the calm reef-protected waters and engaging in elaborate mating rituals. Humpbacks are dubbed singing whales because the males sing during courtship routines, and the low notes of their songs can carry 100km through the open ocean. There are whale-watch and whale-swim operators in all of Tongas island groups.

Inland Treks
Most people travel to the South Pacific for the beaches but no one should go this far without heading inland. Imagine arriving to the tip of a knife-edged peak to watch seabirds fly by at eye level, plunging into massive waterfall pools, or finding petroglyphs hidden by hibiscus next to a rushing river. And these are everyday examples. Hiking is a hot and often muddy endeavour and the trails arent in the best shape but the payoff is worth every discomfort and there are endless adventures to be had.

Easter Islands Moai
The strikingly enigmatic moai are the most pervasive image of Rapa Nui ( ). Dotted all around the island, these massive carved figures on stone platforms emanate a mystical vibe, like colossal puppets on a supernatural stage. It is thought that they represent clan ancestors. The biggest question is, how were these giant statues moved from where they were carved to their platforms? Its a never-ending debate among specialists. Never mind the answer, they have plenty to set your camera clicking without it.
