Basic materials
There is nothing special about the watercolour materials you need for painting. The ones recommended here can be used for any subject, and as a beginner you dont need to buy a whole range of expensive art materials. In fact, the fewer you have, the less you have to learn to use.
Colours
Watercolours come in tubes or pans
Watercolours come in pans or tubes. Pans are better for beginners as you can control the amount of paint you put on your brush much more easily. There are two qualities of paint: Students and Artists. Artists quality are best but Daler-Rowney Students Georgian are very good and less expensive. The following colours are ideal for painting landscapes or seascapes: Alizarin Crimson, Yellow Ochre, French Ultramarine, Cadmium Yellow Pale, Cadmium Red, Hookers Green Dark and, occasionally, Coeruleum blue. For painting flowers, you will need Naples Yellow, Lemon Yellow, Cadmium Yellow, Gamboge, Indian Yellow, Cadmium Orange, Vermilion, Permanent Rose, Permanent Mauve, Phthalo Blue, Cobalt Blue, Phthalo Green, Raw Sienna, Burnt Sienna and a watercolour white.
