INTRODUCTION
I love to eat! This is the primary reason I enjoy baking. There is nothing more satisfying than taking raw ingredients like sugar, flour, eggs, milk, and so on, mixing them together in one form or another, and creating something that looks, smells, and tastes amazing. The world of baking provides a canvas for creativity. The possibilities of flavor combinations, textures, and presentation ideas are endless.
When I was asked to write a second cupcake book, I sat down and thought about where I should begin. I needed some inspiration. Like most people, I always get better ideas when Im eating something, so I started to peel and slice a peach from the small peach tree in our backyard. Even though this tree is small, it has somehow managed to produce enough fruit every season for me to can twenty-six quarts of peaches! As I poured a little cream on top of the peach slices and sprinkled a touch of nutmeg across the top, I was reminded of how many summers I had spent helping my mother and grandmother pick and can peaches, apricots, apples, pears, currants, raspberries, and rhubarb. Fruit, like most things, always tastes best when eaten in season. Thats when the idea came: Why not put together a cookbook that uses ingredients, flavors, and memories for each season?
While I dont have a mother and grandmothers who love to bake and have passed down family recipes, I do have a mother and grandmothers who understand and appreciate the importance of good, simple, fresh food. I grew up drinking fresh cows milk and cream, not because it was a new hip thing to do, but because it was what we had. We planted a garden and canned the produce, not because of a pin on Pinterest, but because it was wise to do so and wasteful not to. Eating the best food you have available, in the season it is available, will result in some of the most delicious dishes of all timein this case, wonderfully seasonal cupcakes! I hope you enjoy some of my favorite seasonal flavors and the memories that go with them. Tradition stems from small moments in life that are remembered and repeated year after year. My hope is that some of these recipes will become a part of those traditions and memories for you and your family!
