Whoever got up the earliest on any given day, generally sometime around noon, was given the responsibility of cranking all six burners on high. The grill bled propane into the sky for ten hours a day.

Did I need 800 degrees of open flame to make scrambled eggs for breakfast? Probably not. Was the grill a gross example of overconsumption? Bet your ass it was, but it was ourgross example of overconsumption. For the first time in our lives we owned something more permanent than an Xbox, and we were going to run it into the ground.

There were ten of us dude-bros and one dog living in a four-bedroom duplex in Isla Vista, the beachside shantytown next to University of California, Santa Barbara. I think its legally considered a slum based on the disease rates, crime rates, and population density.
