To my wife, Jean:
You show me each day what Encore Curve living is all aboutusing your gifts and passions to impact the lives of those around you. Thanks for always inspiring me to be more than I can be by myself.
Acknowledgments
Even though my name is on the cover as author of this book, it is a product of the collective wisdom and hard work of a great team. Many of the ideas germinated from the genius of Dan Sullivan, my mentor for many years and the founder of Strategic Coach. Thank you, Dan, for teaching me new ways to package my wisdom.
All of the inspiration in the world is useless without perspiration. Kelli Sallman, my editor and cowriter, took my ideas and turned them into something workable. She is a great writer and an even better teacher and friend. Kelli, thanks for pushing me further down the trail than I thought I could go and for keeping this project on track.
Kristi Cole, marketer extraordinaire, has been the perfect guide to deal with all the intricacies of graphic art, web design, and social media. We make a great team, and I really appreciate your patience in teaching this tech-challenged soul the same lessons repeatedly.
I am blessed with an extraordinary team in my day job at Raub Capital Management. Sarah Crowe, Kim Parker, and Lynne Thurston have worked hard to keep our business moving forward and serve our clients as I wandered into the world of authorship. Thanks for your friendship and loyalty.
Thanks to Milli Brown and the great team at Brown Books. Milli, you have changed the paradigm of book publishing and have pulled together an amazing group of people, to whom Im indebted. Special thanks to Tom Reale and his team, who have guided the editing and publishing, and to Cathy Williams and her Agency at Brown Books colleagues, who are steering us along the rocky road of making a book successful.
In keeping with the spirit of the first shall be last, my wife Jean has been my greatest inspiration for over forty-nine years. Jean is the epitome of someone who maximizes her encore. She spends countless hours serving others and making their lives better. She challenges me by asking the hard questions, and she encourages me to chase my own Encore Curve visions. Jean also shows me every day what it means to faithfully follow Gods leading. Thank you for being my partner on this great roller-coaster ride we call life. I love you.
Introduction
I have never liked riding roller coasters. I prefer to stay in control and know where Im going next. Unfortunately, my grandchildren love them. Several years ago, my wife, Jean, and I took our two daughters and their families to Disney World to celebrate our anniversary. The biggest and baddest roller coastertype ride they could find was something called Expedition Everest. The whole family lined up to ride, but Jean and I stayed behind to guard all our stuff. After everyone had finished the ride, the conversation for the rest of the day was about how scary it had been: all the vertical climbs, the sudden drops in the dark, and especially the yeti monster that jumped out to frighten everyone.
The next day, my intrepid youngest grandson, Kyle, insisted on returning to the coaster and riding again. Kyle was six years old and couldnt convince any other adults to join him for the second go-round, so I volunteered. As we were standing in line awaiting our fate, Kyle, with his vast experience, went into great detail about what we were soon to encounter: the dark climbs, the gut-wrenching dives, and, of course, the leaping yeti creature. Finally, just before we were strapped into the car, Kyle looked up at me and said, Dandythats my grandpa nameyoure gonna scream like a little girl.
