Acknowledgments
At its very best, creativity is a collaborative process. We want to thank all our students for their perspective, their enthusiasm, and their ideas.
We also want to thank each other for the synergy of the shared process. Neither one of us alone could have created so much, so well, in so short a time. We challenged each other to move out of our comfort zone and to ask, What if ?
Finally, we thank our families, who are always honest and always refreshing in response to our work.

Chapter 1
an introduction to hexagons
Starry Night, 55 66. Machine pieced by Joy Pelzmann. Quilted by Maxine Rosenthal.
Welcome to the next generation of One-Block Wonders. We have taken the basic hexagonal kaleidoscope and enhanced it with straightforward techniques that create powerful designs. These additional techniques produce design elements that amplify the impact of both the individual blocks and the overall quilt. Youll be surprised at how easy these techniques are and yet how complex they look to the observer. Once again, fabric is the key! Other new elements of this book include precise, complete directions for the creative process as well as project instructions for creating your own One-Block Wonders.
You will love this unusual method of designing and creating quilts. The primary fabric does the bulk of the work and defines your color palette. The hexagon blocks you create from this fabric ultimately form the foundation of your quilt, and, once all the blocks are created, you begin to design the final quilt on a design wall. After you are satisfied with your initial arrangement, you can choose from the techniques in this book to add to it. Because you havent committed to a final design at this point, you can audition the elements found in the following chapters: will it be cubes, a banner border, an open slice, or a combination of elements? The possibilities are endless. Not only is designing with kaleidoscopes and cubes a forgiving process, but the elements covered in this book can also be used to address any design challenges you may encounter. Weve taught our method to countless students, and we are confident that with this book, you will be able to create unique and original creations to be proud of.
It is hard to say exactly what size your quilt will be unless you follow the instructions for one of the projects at the ends of the chapters. The quilt size will depend on the design elements you add to the quilt; it may even become two quilts. Its your choice!
Supplies You Will Need
You probably already own all or most of the tools required to make the quilts in this book.
Rotary cutting equipment: You will need a self-healing mat, long and short rulers, and a rotary cutter with a 45mm or 60mm blade. Inserting a new blade into the rotary cutter will ease the work of cutting six layers at once.
A 60 ruler: This ruler is mandatory for creating cubes. We use the Clearview Triangle ruler (See Resources, .) and the measurements for cubes are based on this ruler.
Flower pins: These pins lie flat and do not shift when you are cutting.
