Introduction
To make a larger quilt it isn't alwaysnecessary to use many blocks.
The 4 quilts in this pattern use 1big block to make quilts that are about 45 inches square finished.The units for these quilts include four patches, nine patches, halfsquare triangles and tri square triangles. The instructions arelinked within each pattern as well as instructions for borders,quilt sandwiching and binding which all start after the quiltpatterns.
The Sickle
Finished Size: 45 inches square This quilt works best with more fabrics andhigh contrast. In this example there are 9 different fabrics plus aborder and binding. You could actually make this quilt completelyscrappy as long as there is high contrast between the backgroundand accent fabrics. The pieces for this quilt are 5 inch and 10inch squares which make it suitable for Nickels (5 inch squares)and/or Layer Cake (10 inch square) bundles.
Here's what you'llneed Background: 16 - 5 inchsquares and 4 - 10 inch squares. Assorted Accent Fabrics: 16- 5 inch squares and 4 - 10 inch squares. Border: 4 strips 5 incheswide. Backing and Batting: Atleast 50 inches square. Binding: 6 strips 2 incheswide. Using 2 background 5 inch squares and 2assorted accent fabric 5 inch squares for each, make 8 .
Sew 4 pairs of witha 10 inch background square and a 10 inch accent fabric square andsquare up to 9 inches. Add the .
Ribbon Weave
The Ribbon Weave big block quilt has squares,half square triangles and tri square triangles. The tri squaretriangles are mirrored of like fabric combinations. Choose 3fabrics plus a background that all contrast well from each otherfor the design to show through in your quilt.
Medium Light Fabric (B): 3- 10 inch squares and 1 - 10 inch square.
Medium Fabric (C): 2 - 10inch squares and 1 - 10 inch square.
Dark Fabric (D): 3 - 10inch squares.
Border 1: 4 strips 1inches wide.
Border 2: 4 strips 3inches wide.
Backing and Batting: Atleast 50 inches square.
Binding: 6 strips 2 incheswide.
Binding: 6 strips 2 incheswide.
Sew 1 pair of with medium and dark fabrics using 10 inch squaresand square up to 9 inches. Sew 2 mirrored pairs of using the fabric combinations as shown below andsquare up to 9 inches. Layout all 16 units including 4 background 9inch squares as shown below. Sew on 1 wide . .

Finished Size: 44 inches square This simple and quick big block quilt is justthe right size for a new baby.
Only 2 fabrics plus a binding areneeded for this quilt, and the half square triangle units areperfect for Layer Cake (10 inch square) bundles. Again, highcontrast lets the design shine through and don't be afraid to makeit really scrappy. Here's what you will need Background: 4 - 9 inchsquares and 4 - 10 inch squares. Layout four patch as it will be when sewntogether.
Flip column 2 over on to column 1 with rightsides together. Sew each fabric pair together with a inchseam without cutting thread in between. Open unit and flip row 2 onto row 1 rightsides together. Sew rows together with a inch seam. Press seams to one side.

Layout out nine patch unit as it will be whensew together.
